The polls do not make happy reading for the embattled man in the Oval Office.....

By Josh Robbins
August 26, 2017

Donald Trump's approval ratings hit new lows in August as the beleaguered US president struggled to get a grip of his flailing administration on many fronts and was criticised for his response to violent clashes at a right-wing rally in Virginia that led to the death of a woman. The latest poll-of-polls compiled by FiveThirtyEight shows that 57.2% of US voters currently disapprove of Trump while just 36.9% approve. These figures are the worst than at any point in Trump's presidency before August. However, they are slightly better than Trump's all time low, which came on 7 August – a 57.4% disapproval rating versus 36.6% approval. Trump is suffering the worst ratings in modern history for any president at this stage of their first term in the Oval Office. August has been a particularly chaotic month in the White House, even when judged by the standards of the Trump administration.

It kicked off with the fallout of Anthony Scaramucci's 10-day stint as official spokesperson and the resignation of Chief of Staff Reince Priebus on 31 July. Special advisor Steve Bannon was next out the door, disputing claims that he was pushed, and then deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka resigned on Friday 25 August. Meanwhile the genuine threat of a nuclear war with North Korea rumbled along in the background as did the multiple investigations into Trump and his administration's alleged links to the Russian state. But August 2017 will likely be best remembered for violent scenes in Charlottesville, Virginia, when hundreds of right wing demonstrators gathered to protest the removal of Confederate Army general's statue. The group, which included men in KKK outfits and waving Swastikas, were met by around 1,000 counter protesters. Running street battles between the two groups climaxed when Nazi sympathiser James Fields, 20, allegedly drove his car into a group of counter-demonstrators, injuring at least 19 and killing Heather Heyer, 32. Trump was pilloried in the aftermath of the alleged homicide for claiming that "there is blame on both sides."

The emphasis above was added by me. Allow me to reemphasize that historical low once again ...

Like Gabriel Heatter used to say on the radio - "there is good news tonight".

No one to blame but Trump. He's shot himself in the foot more times than Dick Cheney with a crooked shotgun.

Meh, perhaps there will be another Nazi support rally.

His floor is still some ways away, but it's important not to get caught up in the hype, and to remember that he won't lose any support over "culture war" issues. Guns, bigotry, immigration, religion, abortion...so long as he can tie up every issue into one of those categories (with particular emphasis on bigotry and immigration) he won't lose any support. Trump is completely aware of this, which is why he has been happy to move the national dialogue to those two issues whenever possible. He still has the war card to play (as in, even more war than we have now), but that carries enormous risk. Everything he does that touches on bigotry and immigration are completely safe territories for him. He could wear the nazi flag and sig heil every other sentence and he wouldn't lose ground.

Prescient post

1/3rd of the nation supporting Trump is not going to be good enough.

1/4th maybe.

Hopefully the spineless GOP will continue to own it through 2018. I have a feeling those in congress will continue to distance themselves from him, however.

Don't necessarily like Trump, but we are fortunate that the Democrats do not have the presidency. I wish the next Dem president is held to the same standard and negative media attention flinging around (unlikely) that Trump gets.

I would like to see Trump resign and have Pence take over though.

25 percent was enough to beat the Democrats, you know?

No doubt you'll go down on the ship.

There is every doubt, given that I am a reality based guy and of the TTT at any time I might find out something that changes my mind.

I am sort of a dinosaur that way.

The next ten Democratic presidents wont do as much dumb, indefensible nonsense as Trump has in less than a year.

Got to love how the left keeps trot out polls that are irrelevant. Watching the rallies for Trump shows me the silent majority that isn't being polled. Trump results are what matters not poll numbers which only show that some are easily manipulated by the media and radical left. People loved Obama but ignored his results, some hate Trump and ignore his results. Results matter because they affect people's pocketbooks and right now those pocketbooks are getting a lot bigger.

Yep any poll that shows Trump in a negative light to the his brain dead supporters is "irrelevant" and part of the an "evil radical left plot".

I hear you loud and clear!

Sour Grapes talk.

Trump deserves and brings upon himself all the negative press he gets.

If you're saying regardless of the character or the way in which the next President if they are a democrat conducts themselves, should receive comparable coverage is a farce.

I can't stand Trump - and I have yet to see a polling change that is not within the margin of error. Can we please all stop the nyah-nyah school of political communication? This is just kinda dumb.

The lower he goes the harder he'll play his typical political schtick of policy by spite. That's all he's doing. Finds out what pisses people off and goes for it. He stands for nothing. Just... well... I'll let don explain it @ the 25 second mark:

That's why his advisers can't wrangle him in and put him on a path of actually leading. It has to be about getting even and being spiteful. He's the man-baby we all know him to be.

I'll admit it's a little bit of sour grapes talk, however I think the media largely has a liberal bias and they're incredibly salty about losing an election they thought was in the bag. I do believe for the most part Democrats get a pass or more of a pass than Republicans. Trump could leave the presidency having grown the economy, improved conditions, settled foreign disputes (NK, Middle East, etc.) or by the numbers been a very good president yet be revered as horrible because Twitter and overplayed Russia scandals. I do think there is a media/left wing witch hunt against the president more so than a "we don't like him" as with Bush.

Being a witness to what is happening this isn't a surprise at all.

Gallup latest three day has him at 34%.

In other words, he's right about where he was just before he was elected president. I had to chuckle over this gem:

A new Gallup survey released on Tuesday (just before the election) found that 32 percent of respondents think that Trump possesses the personality and leadership qualities necessary for someone to be president, compared to 51 percent for Clinton. “Voters rate Trump worse than any other presidential candidate in Gallup's records on having the personality and leadership qualities a president should have,” said Gallup. :doh
