Sixteen US staff in Cuba hurt in 'acoustic attack' - BBC News

At least 16 US government employees were treated for symptoms after a possible acoustic attack targeting embassy staff in Cuba, the state department says.
US media reports say the symptoms range from hearing loss to "mild traumatic brain injury", which could include concussion or headaches.
A spokeswoman said the attacks seemed to have stopped. Cuba denied involvement and said it was investigating the reports.

The attacks were first reported earlier this month when the US expelled two Cuban diplomats from Washington. But it was not clear until Thursday how many US employees had been affected.
The Associated Press reports that the sonic devices use may have been emitting inaudible sound waves that can cause deafness.
"We can confirm that at least 16 US government employees, members of our embassy community, have experienced some kind of symptoms," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.
"We take the situation extremely seriously," she added.

What the hell? What could be their end goal? I'm not up on weaponry, but is this easily done? All I have is questions right now, but if it pans out to be true, that was a short lived truce.

I'd say it's akin to China [and other countries] flooding our markets with dangerous products and illicit drugs. It's a type of warfare.

Acoustic weapons. Interesting. Though the US military has used music as a weapon (against Noriega). Rumor is that they researched weaponizing the "Brown sound" so I'd guess there is some weapon usage for sounds.

We aren't providing the Cubans wish sufficient information to make a smarter decision. They need to be thumped harder.

Let's attack Cuba on our way to Venezuela!!!

Let's attack Cuba on our way to Venezuela!!!

I know that is sarcasm, but there are so many deluded citizens that think that makes sense and that is depressing. We keep on fighting the good fight, but since it is against the MSM, it is extremely difficult. Corporate outlives us because it is not a living, breathing citizen. It certainly shouldn't be a citizen, either. A huge economic crash is the only thing that can save us from that behemoth, but even that is a painful alternative.

All seriousness, this definitely warrants some looking into. Whether it was Cuba or another state actor, any attack on our foreign officials need to be given a close examination.

What kind of acoustics were the Cubans using? Julio Iglesias, Barry Manilow, ICP?

Due to the tech, the name floating around behind doing this at the moment is Russia. If that's the case, Cuba and Russia relations will sour pretty badly.

It most likely would have been a very high amplitude and highly focused " Infrasound " device emitting frequencies in the range of 20 Hz or below.

Thats below the range of audio frequencies that can be detected by the human ear
Here's a study on it that also offers up some potential Military and domestic crowd control applications

Oh, and No, I wouldnt put this past the Cubans

High frequency sound devices aka sound cannons are used for crowd control (one such weapon was deployed in Ferguson for example) and as defensive weapons on ships (not uncommon for ships traveling in areas known for piracy). The difference here seems to be that the diplomatic staff was exposed to a low frequency sound repeatedly or for a prolonged period of time.
Since no one else reported these symptoms it's been speculated that it had something to do with translation headsets used by our staff. There's no way to prove that this was a deliberate "attack."

I personally doubt it was the Cubans. They've got nothing to gain and with that level of tech...? If the Cubans are involved it would seem to be only as a partner at best and even then... I don't see what they would have to gain from doing such things while also losing the glut of money that they have coming with thawing relations with the U.S. being that their sugar daddy USSR is gone.

I've also heard that it could have been faulty listening devices.

Acoustic weapons are nothing new.

In my 2 decades of working in embassies I never heard of "acoustic attacks" being something we needed to be concerned about. Never even mentioned. So this is a new one. And I would imagine it is also hard to prove who did it since there is no physical evidence left from the "attack".

I have never worked at or visited an embassy where the staff wore translation headsets. It isn't like at the UN. The only time you use headsets is if you are listening to media and don't want to bother your coworkers. It isn't common. Certainly not common enough for that many people to be affected. Maybe something wrong with the intercom system? Some embassies play music so maybe something wrong with those speakers? Definitely curious.

ICP is considered a war crime under the Geneva Convention.

Well, there's physical evidence on the victims... permanent hearing loss, concussions, brain damage... and that's just what initial medical evaluations have proven. Also, Canadian embassy employees in Cuba have suffered the same symptoms, in varying degrees.

Something bad is happening, and it appears to be deliberate and targeted. I don't like that our government is flapping around like fruit flies, proclaiming to have no real knowledge about this. I mean, find out what's going on, and find out soon. I can't believe our government scientists (if any are left) and the "best" military money can buy are all just scratching their friggin' heads, mumbling "strange, very strange" and doing absolutely nothing about it.

Can mass incompetence be transmitted through the air, like a damned virus?

Sorry Bob... got carried away. I'm done now. :(
