Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassination

Re: Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassinatio

Many of those condemning her apparently feel there is a need since they misquote "hope" into "calling for" and other action words whereas "hope" is strictly passive. May not seem much of a difference but legally it is a crucial difference, and linguistically it is as well.

Publicly hoping a President is assassinated is plenty of reason for dismissal from an elected position. No, it's not quite as bad as calling for an assassination, but it's bad enough. She apologized and I'm sure she regrets her mistake, but it's too late, if she resigns on her own, she can retain a modicum of dignity. If she doesn't, she'll get booted anyway.

Sure, but this is not the point. Indict her for what she did not for what she didn't do.

I'm not a legal expert and so can't comment on this purported difference, but I hope someone will come along who can. In the meantime, "hope" isn't passive at all. One can very actively hope, for example, through prayer. Its opposite is "dread," and this too can be very active.

Re: Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassinatio

From Fox News:
Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens joined calls Friday for state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal to be expelled from the legislature after saying she hopes President Trump is assassinated.

The Republican governor put out a string of tweets noting that lawmakers have called on the Democratic lawmaker to resign and urged the Senate to kick her out if she refuses.

“Senator Chappelle-Nadal said she hopes the President is killed. Republicans and Democrats have called on her to resign,” he wrote. “… Last night, in an interview, she refused to apologize—twice. If she will not resign, the Senate can vote to remove her. I believe they should.” Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassination | Fox News

So do I.

Does anyone thing the republicans have the balls to lean on a black democrat? The media will call them Nazi's and White Supremacists if they go after her. So unless she tries to shoot him herself, she is covered under "Clinton Law". IOW, you can't touch her.

Re: Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassinatio

People can't seem to discuss what she said without exaggerating it. Which suggests that what she said isn't quite so bad as they wished it was.

Actually it is that bad. I was incorrect. She actually said she hoped he was assassinated which is plain wrong. She should resign. I despise Trump both as a president and as a person, but I don't hope for him to be assassinated.

Maybe I've missed the condemnation of this woman by HuffPo and etc. Have I?

Incitement to murder could be a felony, depending on the law in your state. Calling for the killing of anyone would fit the definition.

Prayer also is passive, except as between you and....X.

I'm honestly not sure which term you don't understand, "prayer" or "passive."

Passive means unassertive as contrasted, say, with "demanding". When you pray do you see yourself as demanding?

Re: Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassinatio

When you're unable to discern the difference between 'hoping for' and 'calling for' it's time to go back to school. If, in fact, she had called for the President's assassination she most likely would be under arrest.
But, I learned from liberals that "hope" is irrelevant when something is said when we don't agree with who said it. Or, is that only the rule for progressives?

No idea what you are talking about. But if you feel that "hope" doesn't count in this case, fine.

Re: Missouri governor calls for expulsion of Dem senator who urged Trump assassinatio

It wasn't long ago a deranged angry liberal targeted and shot a congressional Republican, and now another deranged Democrat is calling for the president's assassination. This is uncalled for and frankly unacceptable. Imagine if a state Senate Republican called for Obama's assassination after Giffords was shot. The Media memed for weeks about the Sarah Palin "target" inciting violence and being unacceptable, now we have actual death threats and actual shootings of the GOP and it's not nearly as controversial in the media's eyes the way I see it.

Some of the "resistance" democrats have proven to be among the most nasty, vile, hateful people out there. It's about time the public and the media denounce much of the real hate and bigotry it's perpetuating. Call them out.

And then there are right-wing nut jobs that run over people with their car etc.

What she said was wrong. But it wasn't illegal. Let the voters decide.

Prayer is an activity. "Passive" means "inactive."

Course not....because libs live in the history of now, plus what was said last week or last month means nothing to what you say today...how convenient
