Pastor Wants Presidents’ Names Removed From Washington, Jackson Parks Over Ties To Sl

Re: Pastor Wants Presidents’ Names Removed From Washington, Jackson Parks Over Ties T

Where did I do either? For ****s Sake...

Context AND reading comprehension... work on it pal.
Which of these things do you deny then?
A. You defended Washington's slave ownership because it was legal at the time (rationalization of slavery)
B. You asserted that his supposedly historically important contribution to human rights outweighed his ownership of slaves (glorification of a slave owner)

A. I might have defended his slave ownership as legal... but that does not mean morally. Context. Again... CONTEXT.
B. Yes... for that time period their contribution to human rights was ground breaking and why they are legends. But one has to know the evolution of human rights to understand that.

The statues weren't erected after the war. They were erected with the passing of the Jim Crow laws, at the height of the KKK.

Context - something you like to cherry pick

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which compiled a list of these monuments last year, these monuments are spread over 31 states plus the District of Columbia—far exceeding the 11 Confederate states that seceded at the outset of the Civil War. Most of these monuments did not go up immediately after the war’s end in 1865. During that time, commemorative markers of the Civil War tended to be memorials that mourned soldiers who had died, says Mark Elliott, a history professor at University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

“Eventually they started to build [Confederate] monuments,” he says. “The vast majority of them were built between the 1890s and 1950s, which matches up exactly with the era of Jim Crow segregation.” According to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s research, the biggest spike was between 1900 and the 1920s. In contrast to the earlier memorials that mourned dead soldiers, these monuments tended to glorify leaders of the Confederacy like General Robert E. Lee, former President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis and General “Thomas Stonewall” Jackson.

How The U.S. Got So Many Confederate Monuments
And when did the Jefferson Memorial go up? Mnt Rushmore?

:lamo

and YOU were talking about cherry picking.....

Re: Pastor Wants Presidents’ Names Removed From Washington, Jackson Parks Over Ties T

Well, an argument that was used by the Loyalists was that colonists (known by some as rebels) were upset because the Brits were hostile toward slavery. And indeed there was talk in London about banning it (which came about within a few decades of the Revolution) in England and the empire.
So there you go.

That argument wasn't used by the loyalists in the south, so there ya go... :peace

Dupe thread...this has already been done to death. The fact is that the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and Mt Rushmore were commissioned during the same time the confederate statues were commissioned. No causality...but...but...THEY were racist.
