BEIJING — China won’t come to North Korea’s aid if it launches missiles threatening U.S. soil and there is retaliation, a state-owned newspaper warned Friday — but it would intervene if Washington strikes first.

The Global Times newspaper is not an official mouthpiece of the Communist Party, but in this case its editorial probably does reflect government policy, experts said. The stern Chinese warning came as government leaders and politicians around the world urged calm after a series of threats and counterthreats by the U.S. and North Korean governments. The brinkmanship has spread jitters and weighed on global financial markets, which were down Friday for a fourth consecutive day.

Beijing warns Pyongyang: You?re on your own if you go after the United States

I'm glad the Chinese are finally attempting to quiet the Fat Dumpling Dictator. The rhetoric needs to end.

I'd love it if China could now prove their really our ally (and not just building their economy off of us) by removing Kim Jong Un from power. The people of N Korea deserve a chance at freedom.

Why would China do that? China views South Korea as a puppet of the United States. It would much prefer to keep the current regime in place as a buffer zone between it and a U.S. military presence.

The statement is that they are not our ally. Quite the contrary. They are telling us that it is their area of influence and that they will 'intervene' to protect it.

Those ****ers. How dare they do the same **** we do all the time.

China isn't an ally of the US. Your POTUS claimed China was raping the US economy and a currency manipulator, why would they ally with that, especially considering they're an economic and nuclear power in their own right?

"frenemies" as Waltrip would say.

I think they have made a statement that eloquently and diplomatically addresses both sides of the issue. The USA worked hard to make an enemy of North Korea and now reaps the fruit of years of insane policy and militaristic misadventures. Do we know much about North Korea? Just what we read in the MSM. That would be the same MSM that sold us the lies about Iraq, lies about Libya, lies about Syria, lies about Iran, lies about Panama, etc. The USA has been attacking Nations willyj=nilly sinve WWII. That has to stop. I think North Korea's fears of US intentions are justified, but that their reactive rhetoric is counter productive. Same for the rhetoric from Don Cheeto.

Because people in South Korea are happy, well fed, and not in fear of being killed if they speak their mind. :) North Korean citizens deserve the same.

I agree, but unfortunately I don't think the Chinese leadership look at it that way.

So do Chinese and Russian citizens but since they are living in a rival superpower the rules (US policies?) change.

My personal theory is that all the tension would vanish tomorrow if N Korea agreed to join the International Monetary Fund, and allow the central banking cartel to set up shop in Pyongyang.

How dare they manipulate currency! Outrageous really, that's supposed to be a tool that we only allow the Federal Reserve to use. All the gelt belongs to the wonderful zheni at the Fed.

Where did you ever get the idea that China is an ally?

I heard an interesting analogy about Korea.

The commentator posed the two Korea's as children of a broken home, each raised by one of their parents.

South Korea got the good parent. Best clothes and schools and every advantage. Every time the silver spoon fell out of their mouth, a new one was inserted to replace it.

North Korea got the bad parent. Neglected by the self consumed, distracted narcissist and left to gain attention only through "acting out".

Now the "good parent" is being threatened by the kid who found the bad parent's loaded hand gun.

The bad parent holds some degree of responsibility in this.

I got that same impression. Kind of like a Monroe Doctrine with a twist.

Very true!

I've noticed an eerie similarity in the rhetoric today and the rhetoric leading up to Iraq war II.

Remember the Maine!

The statement is that they are not our ally. Quite the contrary. They are telling us that it is their area of influence and that they will 'intervene' to protect it.

Which is exactly what Trump wants them to do. Trump is banking on the Chinese using their influence over NK to quell the situation.

:inandout:

This certainly creates the conditions needed to examine Chinese trade and trade practices. I'd start with aluminum and steel tariffs, and cruise over to requiring retroactive license fees for their use of stolen technology, and start inspecting for counterfeit brands on the dock.

And I'd lean on Apple for co operating with China tightening up it information systems by Apple cooperating in removing apps that might let freedom of information creep in.

Australia and Japan have also stated support for the US position.

Seems like litle Kimmie might be on his own on this one.

China isn't an ally of the US. Your POTUS claimed China was raping the US economy and a currency manipulator, why would they ally with that, especially considering they're an economic and nuclear power in their own right?

Because China needs us economically. They loan the US money to cover the national debt, which by and large gets returned in payment for their products.

Which is not to say they are an ally. Far from it. But I doubt that China wants NK to upset the cash cow.

China isn't a democracy and the freedom the Chinese enjoy is that allowed by the government. Dissent above a certain level isn't tolerated. There's no reason for China to remove Kim Jong Un unless China wants him replaced, with a more dedicated puppet of their own. Un crossing the Chinese is the only way he would be removed. I think the Chinese are kind of enjoying this. China has a long term plan to become the most powerful nation on this earth in 30-50 years. They see the U.S. in decline and they on the rise.

Time for the Chinese doesn't have the same meaning as it does for us. One could say the Chinese are looking toward the future, while we live in the present without giving the long term future much if any thought.

A few years ago that would have been a truth. I think China and Russia have weakened the IMF with BRICS and Southeast Asian cooperation agreements, plus using their own currencies for mutual trades. The US works to keep the India, Vietnam, Philipines, and others in an antagonistic local mode to prevent a more unified SE alliance. The banking cartel has been weakened and the USA is allowing the USDollar to drop to stimulate exports at the expense of the Banking cartels. The Energy cartels reap the benefits.

Which will make it difficult for our relationship with traditional allies, whom china does not want us to be allied with.
