In a new poll, half of Republicans say they would support postponing the 2020 electio

Re: Half of Republicans would support postponing the 2020 election if Trump proposed

Different context and hence, different meaning. I'd certainly rather have had a third Obama term than either Hillary or Trump in office. But I would not cancel or postpone an election ordained by the Constitution to get there. If you ask someone would they rather x than y, the unspoken assumption is typically that no extraordinary circumstances obtain.

The question asked of Republicans was whether or not they would support postponing an election. I wouldn't be alarmed if they had agreed that, say, George Bush should have had five terms. If they'd agreed that elections should be cancelled to bring that situation about, that'd be an entirely different matter.

 well, 67% of Democrats disagreed with you on that.

In reality, everyone probably treats this as a "what-if" exercise, and just don't think about it.

That, or the Tribalism really is that strong.

Because you can't defend stupidity that's why. There was a big freakin paragraph at the beginning of the poll about how this was a hypothetical question. How did all these people get trolled from it?

You failed to understand the purpose of his links....

The participants aren't BEING trolled here.

The participants in the poll are TROLLING the pollsters.

They are agreeing to a very ignorant notion just to **** with them.

It didn't say that anywhere in those two links. You are taking a leap of faith here. In my experience most people can barely follow the directions of something new placed right in front of them for the first time. Let alone try to trick up the people who are giving those directions out. You are just making crap up maybe because you don't want to believe people really are this dumb.

I can't find a link to the WPA poll that was conducted in that article. I'm curious what the exact wording was. Do I "want" a third Obama term? Yes, yes I do. Would I support that as a viable, rational option? No, I would not.

I agree with you - the question does matter. For me this is more of an issue about people willing to give up their rights. Since 9/11 too many people are willing to accept the govt as a benevolent entity that will take care of them, so they don't need rights.

You are right.

You got me.

I don't want to believe that people are dumb enough to vote for this.

Just like I don't want to believe people are dumb enough (67% of Democrats in a similar "Troll Poll") to state that they would rather violate the constitution and give Obama a third term.

That's the funny thing about trolls, any size hook, or any rotten bait will attract them.

Luckily for America, our nation is not run according to Trump supporters, but according to the Constitution of the United States of America. But not all people who live in America are Americans, as many would like nothing more than to see Donald Trump installed as a dictator. But that's not going to happen. Real Americans will make sure of it, and any resulting SCOTUS decision against the Trump camp would be 9-0.

That headline is misleading. The survey doesn't mention anything abiut cancelling an election.

How else would Obama get a third term??

Re: Half of Republicans would support postponing the 2020 election if Trump proposed

On what factual basis? Do you really want to live in country where the government demands registration details for every citizen in the country - and does not supply anything more than rumor?

I want to live in a serious country where people must prove that they are citizens before being allowed to vote.

Only by amending the Constitution. Canceling the election would keep him in office, not create a "third term".

Semantics.

The true result of the poll is that the respondents don't want liberals back in the White House. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with Trump. Most "GOP'rs" don't want Trump back in 2020.

Other than hearsay, can you give any proof that any sort of illegal voting actually exists? And if the next president is a Dem with a Dem congress do you want them to have all your voting information? Is Trump the only president that you would trust with that information?

Most important - should I put you down as willing to postpone the next election?

Proof: PolitiFact's Deceptive Report on Illegal Voting by Non-Citizens - Just Facts

All of the voting information that the commission is seeking is publicly available. So yeah, I better trust everyone with that information.

Did they? Is that the question they were asked? That's not what your link said. It said they were asked whether they'd rather see another Obama term rather than have Hillary or Trump. So would I. But again, I wouldn't want to cancel or postpone an election to do so, and put in those terms, I suspect most of that 67% would also not want to cancel or postpone an election.

The Republicans, however, were specifically asked whether they would support postponing an election on the word of either Trump, or Trump plus Republicans in congress, and a majority of them agreed to that.

Sure, everyone does treat these as a what-if exercise, but the reference of that "what" is pretty important. "What if Obama could get a third term" means something like "what if the Constitution allowed him to get a third term." "What if Trump postponed the election" means postponing the election.

Different contexts, different meanings.

Re: Half of Republicans would support postponing the 2020 election if Trump proposed

I think either major party would be fine with a dictatorship if they get to be the dictators.

We have elections so this does not happen. At least we used to.

We still have elections....

We just had one in 2016. And when November 2017 comes around, we will still be having elections (usually just local elections, but those are important too).

And in November 2018, there will be elections.
And in November 2019, there will be elections.
And in November 2020, there will be elections.
And in November 2021, there will be elections.
And in November 2022, there will be elections.
And in November 2023, there will be elections.
And in November 2024, there will be elections.
And in November 2025, there will be elections.
And in November 2026, there will be elections.
