Did Trump just confirm the existence of a covert CIA program in a tweet? - LA Times

President Trump took aim at the Washington Post in a series of tweets Monday night.

The president appeared to take issue with a Post article published last week that reported that Trump had decided to end a secret CIA program to arm and train Syrian rebels to fight the government of President Bashar Assad. The report stated that Russia had long wanted to see the program phased out, and that Trump's decision to do so reflected his desire to work more closely with Moscow.
WaPo: The CIA did this thing last week according to unnamed sources.
CIA: We neither confirm or deny our operations.
Trump: That's cause I shut those operations down!

It's of note that Trump connected the CIA, Amazon and Jeff Bezzos. It must be hard to look at Bezzos and not be envious of everything he has accomplished. 88 billion. How much is Trump worth?

Add another reason for the intelligence community to distrust trump

Just at or slightly less than $1B when we add in all his debts.

I am shocked the Republican Party is sitting back and allowing this moron to destroy and attack the intelligence agencies in this country.

Party before country is the GOP motto, and I will never forgive them, no matter how this ends.

trump has 13 months to go by the Nixon model, which won't happen until DEMs take over the house in 2019. Even then, the Senate will not convict at 67 votes to remove trump.

Impeaching runs the risk of the sympathy factor for trump, as we saw with Bill Clinton .

What a disastrous Monday for the Nation from trump. Unfortunately, it's not going to get any better. The sooner DEMs realize that in their positive approach to Americans with their BETTER DEAL, the better .

That secret CIA program was never that secret.

I expect everyone on DP who paid any attention knew the CIA was providing weapons and training to Syrian rebels before last week

How, exactly, would you recommend that the GOP stop the duly elected President of the United States from doing anything, other than an action that could be defined as a ****ing coup d'état?

The CIA will NEVER confirm or deny their operations. That's a given.

However, we've know for years that the Obama administration...including the CIA...has been arming and training Syrian rebels even though they knew a lot of those rebels were terrorists. And, it wasn't just the Obama administration working toward those ends. McCain and McMullin...both supposedly Republicans...were instrumental in the operation.

Seems to me Trump did a good thing in shutting that down.

[emoji23] why have intelligence agencies when Trump can just tell you what's what? Amiright Mycroft?

Impeachment was never defined as a coup d'état when Obama was around.

"In early September 2013, President Barack Obama told U.S. Senators that the CIA had trained the first 50-man insurgent element and that they had been inserted into Syria.[42] The deployment of this unit and the supplying of weapons may be the first tangible measure of support since the U.S. stated they would begin providing assistance to the opposition."

Just a little heads-up to help you catch-up.

Why worry about Trump when we have the Mainstream Media releasing more classified information than he does?

That he shut it down isn't the point.

I'm all for that, if you can show an actual law that he's broken that he could be impeached on. Got anything?

For the record, again, every time Trump tweets I cringe. But, it isn't illegal. And as for this thread, the President is the ultimate authority when it comes to what is classified and what is not. What he here, however, is just one more serious mistake made by a guy that should never have been elected because he doesn't have a clue about the government. But, we're past that. He's the President.

Also, for the record, I never even entertained the idea of impeaching Obama, because he didn't do anything that rose to the level of an impeachable offense.

The attacks on Washington Post makes no sense. They are just reporting what happened, and of course, Trump did not elaborate on what "facts," the Wash Post got wrong. I'll go out on a limb here and say none!

lolz. Trump's son has released more classified information than all MSM outlets combined.

This was my first thought, if this program was supposed to be "covert" then the entire CIA needs to be abolished for incompetence. Info about this has been out on this for years. I remember Tulsi Gabbard railing against Obama on this awhile back.

The issue isn't shutting down the operation. It's more about the President confirming its existence.

It may not have been much of a secret, but I don't know that talking about was a good idea.

Yes, Trump needs to stick around for as long as possible for his base to really feel the full sting of what it is they were hollering so loudly for. Any attempt to remove him will make him a martyr and they will just vote for someone else to continue the nightmare policies. The policies need to fully implemented, and his electorate made to bear the consequences completely unmitigated for as long as possible.

If I was a Dem in congress, I would vote to give the people what they so desperately want and what Trump promised them: full repeal of Obamacare, full-out embargoes and trade wars with China, Mexico, Canada, and whoever else they want, isolationism, "bombing the s--t out of Syria, Iran, N. Korea, and whoever else they want, ...

Go for it guys. And no impeachment. Even if you beg for it. Promise. Have fun and knock yourselves out.

Why is him confirming it's existence an issue? Everyone who has any interest in American foreign policy already were aware of it. Even if it wasn't widely known, he is the president and it is his choice whether or not classified information can be disclosed to the public. If he were to decide to release all of our national secrets to Fox news tomorrow, it would be perfectly legal.

Another reason that our intelligence community is ****. Trump is right, we should not be operating there.

Hmmmm....I'm positive you were equally outraged at this:

"In a front-page story, the Times recently exposed the identity of the covert operative running the CIA’s Iran operations as Michael D’Andrea — noting that he was “known as the Dark Prince or Ayatollah Mike, nicknames he earned as the Central Intelligence Agency officer who oversaw the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the American drone strike campaign that killed thousands of Islamist militants and hundreds of civilians.”

Even more troubling, the Times not only identified D’Andrea by name, it also reported his alleged role in the killing of a senior Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist leader. “Operatives under his direction played a pivotal role in 2008 in the killing of Imad Mugniyah, the international operations chief for Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shiite militant group based in Lebanon,” the Times reported.
