5 teens who mocked drowning man not charged

I believe most states have Good Samaritan Laws. Florida's must be lax.

Don't Good Samaritan laws generally prevent people rendering aid from being sued? These were Bad Samaritans who obviously had no qualms about violating the one universal law that's been handed down for thousands of years:

“Take heed to thyself, my child, in all they works, and be discreet in all thy behavior; and what thou thyself hatest, do to no man.”

What did we expect? The police, even wannabe police, can legally murder unarmed folk in the streets. We are at endless war slaughtering civilians around the world daily and partnering with Jihadists when it serves our selfish interests, when we're not killing them. We have an economic system they preys upon society to benefit a privileged few. We have returned to profiting from bondage with for profit prisons. Our "leaders" continue to push the lie that the "jobs are coming back" while promoting division among the masses. We are the only advanced post industrial nation that refuses to value life over wealth enough to manage healthcare and education for all citizens. We dump our elders into warehouse nursing homes so we can continue to maximize our earning and spending. We bail out Wall Street with socialism for blowing the savings, futures, and homes of millions of little people.

It should be intuitively obvious to even the most casual of observers that this "inhuman trash" is to be an expected outcome of our inhuman society; that this "inhuman trash" has learned the message and lessons of our society very well indeed. Human beings simply do not matter, especially those in need of any kind of assistance, they are losers.

Ok, Mr "I think Missisissippi is part of our "empire" "

You copying and pasting the same old rant, even when the problems with that rant have been repeatedly exposed, just shows how one dimensional your whole way of thinking is.

I'm not going to watch a video of that disgusting nature.

But as disgusting and horrendous as their act is, I will not advocate for government to criminalize a lack of compassion.

That is too dangerous a slope to start down ...

We certainly have refused to pursue that as it pertains to police on the job.

Please show me where that was posted before, should be easy to do, even for you, I'll wait.

Yeah I won't be clicking that liveleak video. It will just make me sick and want to beat those kids with a bat. I don't think they should be charged as by law they had no legal duty to do anything. They are some sick puppies though.

It's disgusting. Truly sickening, letting a fellow human die like that. My soul still hurts thinking about it.

You don't remember your own words? You said "such is empire" when the plane went down in Mississippi.

Your theories about American society are, to be frank, dead wrong. This has more to do with the nature of teenage guys--- something which has remained consistent for many years around the world--- than it does anything with society as a whole

Have you heard about our health"care" system?

Nope. Thank you.

As I stated previously, copying and pasting a one dimensional rant does not prove anything, only that you lack basic knowledge.

But you can't find it anywhere else, I got it, thanks, was that all then?

They're all between 14 and 16.

The laws need to be changed.

You think the law should compel people to action? What had happened if they teens had went in after him and 1 one them ended up drowning. Would the state be on the hook since the law forced them to help?

I'm am in no way justifying or condoning what the teens did, I'm just bringing up a point about reactionary laws.

From the local CBS affiliate:

Police said that Dunn walked into the pond by himself, WKMG-TV reports. Police aren't sure if he was suicidal but said he just had an argument with his fiancee. Dunn's body wasn't found until July 14.

Police identified and interviewed the five teens involved. Cocoa Police Chief Mike Cataloupe calls their actions "utterly inhumane and cruel," but says criminal charges won't be filed because state law doesn't require people to help or call 911 when someone's in distress. Florida man Jamel Dunn's drowning recorded by group of teens, police say - CBS News

Some states require that witnesses must call for help.

And?

When I was 16 I was a lifeguard, third day on the job I had a kid DROWN in my pool, I pulled him out, did full cpr, saved his life.

Getting help does not mean they have to help. Most states would only require for them to try and get help. Since they had a cell phone they would have been expected to call for help.

No, many require a person that witnesses a crime or emergency must try and seek help.

They talked on the video about calling 9-1-1 but never did. Dunn's decomposing body was found days later and was at first a "John Doe." UPDATE: Dead Man Found Floating In Cocoa Pond Last Friday Identified as Jamel Dunn |

But they did upload the video to social media. That's what is so troubling--that these kids could pass the blunt and watch a real human being die and have this mean nothing more than a video or cartoon. Such a disconnect. He wasn't even real to them.:(

No, many require a person that witnesses a crime or emergency must try and seek help.

Hmm. That's not my understanding of what a Good Samaritan law is or does. Can you provide an example? Besides, if the only reason a person renders aid is to avoid punishment, how would that make him a good anything?

Wow. This is what people who lack any kind of empathy do.

Really wish there were a law that could be used to throw the book at them. My heart goes out to the family of the drowned man.

In light of the new theme here at Debate Politics, I blame Trump.

I said OUR SOCIETY! Our society is made of more than just Black teens.

So what's the connection between Hannity or Rush and the dehumanization of people within our society in general? I don't see one.

Social media has indeed bred a whole new level of sociopathy, but remember that people have been choosing to not get involved forever. I was in a car accident with a broken leg and nobody stopped for me until the police arrived, which took 45 minutes. You can die from a broken leg. I was sitting on the curb in agony. Lots of people slowing down to look at my wrecked car though.

Smart phones have created a huge disconnect between entertainment and reality in a lot of people. I was at a fireworks show two weeks ago and everyone around me had their phones out recording the show instead of just enjoying it. People are addicted to the kick they get from social media attention and it has also atrophied people's ability to live real experiences and therefore implement values in a timely way. Everything goes through the phone filter now, giving people a false sense that they are experiencing life through the internet.

I am concerned more for young people whose brains are still developing in this climate of social media. The addiction starts young.

Wow. This is what people who lack any kind of empathy do.

We know there are sociopaths within our society and we could wrap our heads around this if this complete lack humanity were the act of a single person, but what's especially troubling is NOT ONE of these yoots gave any thought to rendering aid but, on the contrary, thought it was a great opportunity to mock the victim.
