Putnam: Say what? 9-year-old muzzled at Lansing council meeting

What that particular city "leader" seems to have forgotten is that he is a public servant, not a public master.

He's probably a liberal democrat and by extension believes he's a public master. You know any far leftists who actually care about what the people want ? Google "gay marriage election in California" and get back to me. If a leftist believes in a certain policy they literally believe opposing them on it is morally wrong

She learned an important lesson, when democrats make decisions the people's job is to shut up and accept it.

These public comment sessions are a waste of time anyway. They're purely for show, the decision was made before the meeting was even scheduled. The important takeaway....

Well that is a bit harsh but I dont see a need to line up a few hundred kids to say "We want our park" which mostly probably means "Our parents want this park but think a kid speaking will be more effective" which in this case did not work because a no nonsense black woman was running the show.

I can honestly say I have accurately predicted how whichever agency I testified before would vote in advance and it is always on partisan lines and always against the majorly of commenters. Going to public meetings is a waste of time. The decision was already made, by some career bureaucrat in a dark office somewhere and the meeting is the elected officials going along with said bureaucrat while pretending they give a flying you know what, about what normal people think. The fact is, regular people like you and me aren't going to disrupt the meeting dressed like Sea Turtles or throwing blood on the commissioners or chanting "bush lied babies died" or whatever the hell so they don't care what we think

Horrible PR....And from my 'hometown'....Sad to see...

Lansing was the first in the State to become a 'Sanctuary city' and with leadership like this it is fully believable....:(

I was there last week...Wow.

You may have heard that I recently had this experience with my HOA, and I have heard often that city councils are the same way. I few months back I was reading some politico that I trust (sadly I dont remember who, the way my brain works is that I tend to pay a lot more attention to the quality of idea than I do who I heard saying it...one I tend to remember, the other not so much)......anyway he said (paraphrase) " Go look at your broken down city councils, school boards and HOA's, barely entertain the thought that they want to do better or that they want your help, what they have is usually exactly what they want......and what they want in part is for you to go away".

Not that it wasn't great to see like-minded concerned citizens--often, wildly different groups will come together in common cause, which is wonderful, but there isn't much socialization unless this is before or after the meeting. City council and county commissioner meetings in my county have enforced protocols. You don't go over your allotted minutes, for example. There is a little flexibility when there is an awards segment and family members show up (and then leave). I wonder if the meetings are controlled as they are because they're shown on the city's TV channel.

No, i was talking about regulars who showed up at every meeting and spoke on everything. Usually I'd guess just lonely people who had nothing better to do.

Democrats? Where's that coming from? Is it even germane to the discussion, or is it just a kind of drive-by snide remark?
I say she learned to mistrust and resent authority. I say she's more likely to grow up rebellious than obedient. More likely, in other words, to be liberal than conservative.

Or, maybe she learned that you can't always get what you want. (But if you try sometimes well.......)

No, she learned to resent and mistrust authority. Guess what message she got from her parents after the hearing, after they had encouraged her and helped her write her speech and probably her teacher at school had encouraged her and...?
Or maybe she just toddled into the room all by her lonesome and disrupted the meeting. What's your guess?

Maybe she learned that reality sucks and that things don't always work out the way you want them to. Maybe she learned that the world is not going to roll ever and play dead just because she and her Mommy and her Aunt Khalifa wrote a speech. Maybe she learned that one of these days when she is a taxpaying, contributing member of her community that her voice will have more sway. Maybe, but I doubt it.

**** happens! Life goes on. Sometimes, you just have accept the fact that gold stars and smiley faces are a part of the Big Lie.

She learned that the council woman does not listen to her constituents during citizens' time to speak.

So when she's old enough to vote, she can get revenge. Her raison d'etre.

(life really sucks when you don't get a trophy)

Get out. "Roll over and play dead"? What happens to someone that makes them so bitter, so willing to roll over a small girl because 'reality sucks'?
Jesus. I don't know where you live but it's not in the country I've visited hundreds of times and never had a bad encounter with the people. Must be Trumpistan, where the country sucks and there's nothing but corruption in government and everybody lies and it's every man for himself.

So when she is old enough, she runs for council and sends a message to the former council woman to come talk during citizen's meeting and not shut her off.

One of the main problems with our society, our culture, and our world, is that spoiled children have been taught to think that they can have anything that they want. Life doesn't work that way. You can paint yourself red and run naked in the streets until you turn purple, but you will never change that which is: adults make decisions, children do what they are told. EZPZ-lemon-squeezy.

Mouthing off? That little girl wanted to give a statement to the city council about how she and other kids her age were going to be effected by the shuttering of two city parks so that a golf course could expand and create more revenue to the government....Great lesson to teach her about civics.

Let's be honest, the 9 year old probably is able to play nicer with other kids/would be less partisan and more grown up than those politicians (most of whom have the mental age of toddlers).

I am not sure I see a value added to have a 9 years old explain the importance of a playground to a city council meeting rather than a child psychogist and urban planer. What will she bring to the table that is worth the cost and limited time of a council meeting.
But you are right about learning about civics. One of the things is that there are procedures in political life that are best maintained other than emergency. And, of course, society is about the others at least as much as oneself.

That bit of satire was worth a chuckle. It was meant as satire, was it not? Surely, no one would ever take it at face value.

Who pissed in your Cheerios? Damn life seems to have handed you a ****ty hand.

I feel sorry for your kids if you have any.

This official's closed minded attitude is actually at odds with the liberal philosophy behind sanctuary cities.
