White House releases sensitive personal information of voters worried about their sensitive personal information

White House releases sensitive personal information of voters worried about their sensitive personal information - The Washington Post

The White House on Thursday made public a trove of emails it received from voters offering comment on its Election Integrity Commission. The commission drew widespread criticism when it emerged into public view by asking for personal information, including addresses, partial social security numbers and party affiliation, on every voter in the country.

It further outraged voters by planning to post that information publicly.

Voters directed that outrage toward the Trump White House and the voter commission, often using profanity-laced language in the 112 pages of emails released this week.

“You will open up the entire voting population to a massive amount of fraud if this data is in any way released,” one voter wrote.

“Many people will get their identity stolen, which will harm the economy,” wrote another.

“I respectfully request, as an American-born citizen legally eligible to vote for two decades, that you leave my voter data and history alone, do not publish it, and do nothing with it,” said another.

Unfortunately for these voters and others who wrote in, the Trump administration did not redact any of their personal information from the emails before releasing them to the public. In some cases, the emails contain not only names, but email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers and places of employment of people worried about such information being made available to the public.

This clown car is really veering off the road.

Re: White House releases sensitive personal information of voters worried about their

Wow who predicted this would happen... like everyone not drinking the Trump coolaid.

Re: White House releases sensitive personal information of voters worried about their

I wonder what the spin will be that the Trump supporters will offer for this.

The Washington Post is not publishing any of this information because in most cases it does not appear that the individuals were aware their comments would be shared by the White House. The emails were sent to the Election Integrity Commissions' email address that the administration asked U.S. secretaries of state to send data files to. “This request is very concerning,” wrote one. “The federal government is attempting to get the name, address, birth date, political party, and social security number of every voter in the country.” That email, published by the White House, contained the sender's name and home address."

Wow.

I wonder what the spin will be that the Trump supporters will offer for this.

Especially if they were also outraged that CNN threatened to dox a racist troll.

Apparently this administration has no intention of doing anything competently.

Bold part is a link to: Presidential Advisory Commision on Election Integrity

In that link is a paragraph that states:

You may submit your responses electronically to ElectionIntegrityStaff@ovp.eop.gov or by utilizing the Safe Access File Exchange (“SAFE”), which is a secure FTP site the federal government uses for transferring large data files. You can access the SAFE site at https://safe.amrdec.army.mil/safe/Welcome.aspx. We would appreciate a response by July 14, 2017. Please be aware that any documents that are submitted to the full Commission will also be made available to the public. If you have any questions, please contact Commission staff at the same email address.

Note the part in bold.

If people submitted these emails then they did so knowing that the info would be released to the public. If they didn't know that it would be released to the public then they should have read the whole thing and have no one to blame but themselves.

Violating values only bothers those who have them.

Difference being is that CNN actively went out and searched for that racist trolls private information. The people that submitted these emails were told that it would be made public (as I showed in post 7), and yet they still gave out that private information voluntarily.

You are correct.

But at the same time, the government was requiring individuals to enter their private data, simply to leave a comment!

"“Some agencies may require that you include personal information, such as your name and email address, on the comment form,” the website explains. "

But even before this, anyone who would allow the Trump org to build a detailed database on every voter in America, is serious lacking upstairs. His voters didn't follow due diligence by giving him their vote without insisting he first bare his business dealings for public inspection, and now look what we have. And now are they going to allow Trump to collectively build a database of all Americans? Including their party and voting record? Wha?

Wake up, America!

While I agree that the people probably should have expected some of this to be released to the public, as is the case in much of comments to executive agencies, I'm not sure they should've expected that based on this. That seems to be a letter to the Connecticut Secretary of State, and voters didn't really have a reason to suspect that because her comments, in her public servant position, would be made public, that theirs would too.

I dont think anyone would reasonably expect personal details like email addresses or phone numbers or addresses would be released to the public.

Competence would suggest that stuff get redacted, especially if they actually read the emails, complaining about keeping information private!

You guys always talk about how government is incompetent... and it certainly seems to be when the GOP is in charge. Self fulfilling prophecy.

Did anyone tell these people at the time they sent their complaints? Apparently the integrity commissions website only appeared this week

As far as I know, no. Which it certainly should have told them if it intended to release private information.

They were told the documents they submitted (ie their comments) would be made public. It does not say their personal info would be made public.

Under Trump, if you want to complain about the how his voter fraud investigation puts your personal data at risk of being made public, you have to submit your personal info to a website and have it be made public. Do you not see a problem with this?

This is 2017. If you don't know that anything you send electronically can end up in the public sphere you haven't been paying attention.

Well it didn't, and it explains why the criticism exists.

Agreed. But just like the fact you should know that you shouldn't go walking around South St. Louis alone at 3:00 a.m. doesn't absolve the guy who mugs you, that doesn't necessarily excuse the people who release your information into the public sphere.

True, Kal' if your information is correct. Not even a may or might, A WILL.

Also from the OP's article:

Federal agencies often solicit and release public comments on proposed legislation. Regulations.gov, the federal government's clearing house for public comments, includes a detailed set of guidelines explaining how to submit comments, what type of personal information is collected and how that information may be used. “Some agencies may require that you include personal information, such as your name and email address, on the comment form,” the website explains. The Securities and Exchange Commission, for instance, warns commenters to “submit only information that you wish to make available publicly.” Similarly, the Federal Trade Commission tells commenters that “published comments include the commenter’s last name and state/country as well as the entire text of the comment. Please do not include any sensitive or confidential information.”

The White House does not appear to have issued any such public guidelines or warnings before many of the emails were sent.

"These are public comments, similar to individuals appearing before commission to make comments and providing name before making comments," said Marc Lotter, Press Secretary to Mike Pence, in an email. "The Commission’s Federal Register notice asking for public comments and its website make clear that information 'including names and contact information' sent to this email address may be released." The Federal Register notice soliciting comments was published on July 5. The White House page was published on July 13. Approximately half of the emails published by the White House were dated prior to July 5.

And the page published July 13, is here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2017/07/13/presidential-advisory-commission-election-integrity

In post #7, you cited a letter from Kobach to Connecticut's Secretary of State. It's not really a debunking of the WaPo article unless it would be impossible for each individual who sent an email to do so without seeing that specific letter. Otherwise, it sounds like the problem is that the warnings that agencies typically use regarding public information were not provided until emails had already been submitted.

Records aren't kept of how people vote. Ballots are secret.

This is why you never ever give any government official anything.......period!

They are all bottom feeders who will throw the average Joe under the bus in a heartbeat.

Kinda like the liberal asshole politician in Connecticut who wanted to publish the names and addresses of all the gun owners in CT..

WaPo is being misleading here. the article you linked..
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-personal-information/?utm_term=.5fbb2079c793

... that article links to another WaPo article ...
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...very-voter-in-america/?utm_term=.a07d13f63b38

...in that article it says regarding the requested information...
"Under federal law, each state must maintain a central file of registered voters. States collect different amounts of information on voters. While the files are technically public records, states usually charge fees to individuals or entities who want to access them."

So the requested information is already public record at the state level.
