WASHINGTON — Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy, according to three people with knowledge of the email.

The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting. In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.

Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign. There is no evidence to suggest that the promised damaging information was related to Russian government computer hacking that led to the release of thousands of Democratic National Committee emails.

July 10, 2017: the day the Republican narrative officially transformed from "collusion is a hoax" into "yes, there was collusion but meh, whatever."

the NSA should provide his email activity to Mueller in order to see if this allegation holds water.

the GOP Congress doesn't have the balls to confront this 'commie' bull**** .................. Trump has already grabbed them all by the ***** ..............

I smell a HUGE pile of bull**** odor exponentially expanding ................

Boy, you read exactly what you wanted to read into that, didn't you?

To you, "no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy" and "no evidence to suggest . . . was related" to the hacking and release of info becomes "officially," "yes, there was collusion."

Keep the faith, Smitty.

The "information" was supposed to be that Russia was actively supporting the DNC, including with funds, and was supposed to come from a private Russian lawyer (whom, because apparently the Trump campaign staff wasn't exactly high-speed when it came to vetting, actually has ties to the Kremlin. We have no idea whether or not Jr knew this).

I realize there is a large contingent on the left who are not past the "Bargaining" phase..... but please. Stop pinning your hopes on the idea that anything run by Trump will be super-effective, or capable of keeping secrets. Trump is not a Manchurian Candidate; if nothing else, for the simple reason that he would be unable to avoid bragging about it on Twitter, were it so.

What about "Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy," isn't clear? One can't claim he didn't know that the material came from the Russian govt when the email he received explicitly said it was.

1st, the Trump team claimed that there were no meetings.
2nd, when it was discovered that there were meetings, they said they were get to know you meetings or about policy.
Now, we learn all that was BS and proof of collusion.

Looks like the chickens are coming home to roost.

Knowing the source of the material isn't "collusion," especially when the story indicates no knowledge of actually working with anyone connected with the Kremlin.

Maybe you're not quite conversant with the term?

I find it rather normal that any given country would have a preference for one candidate over another in a US election. Certainly we have, and voice, our opinions regarding candidates in foreign elections. Many times we covertly act to get our guy into office.

Other countries have interests in the outcome of our elections. Mideast countries by the handful are on the list of donors to The Clinton Foundation, and that is simply the US form of bribery, pay to play.

NYT will not be writing about Israeli influence in our election process and more. AIPAC fairly well runs the federal government. By rule, it should be forced to register as an agent of a foreign government, which it is.

But, Americans often like to embrace their inner cowards, their inner mythological boogeymen, and today as ever, it's Russia.

I'm pretty sure I've never called him a "Manchurian Candidate." The specific principle behind being a Manchurian Candidate requires total stealth, so obviously we can rule Trump out in that regard. As for the point about him being unable to avoid bragging, I disagree. Just because he has a big stupid mouth doesn't mean he's unable to protect himself when he needs to. If that weren't true, a man as flagrantly corrupt as him would have been in prison decades ago.

Anyone with a computer could easily discover that Natalia Veselnitskaya was a lawyer for Russian state monopolies, Russian oligarchs, and a Russian real estate tycoon wanted by the USDoJ for money laundering, a scheme which was exposed by Sergei Magnitsky who was later murdered by the Putin regime in prison for whistleblowing. Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort would never agree to meet with anyone in Trump Tower without a thorough pre-meeting vetting.

Really? You're propping your argument on the rock-solid, competent vetting Team Trump does?

Even if you are, you're going quite a bit off-text and into speculation. The story doesn't actually say any such thing. You, too, are reading things into it.

Lol. You're going to put forth the argument that three top officials (and kin) of a presidential candidate would meet with anyone off the street without knowing anything about them?

And you expect everyone believe this fairy tale?

:rofl

I didn't say any of that. There's a pretty big gap between the hardcore competent vetting you suggest must have happened, and just meeting with anyone off the street.

Tell me, what in Team Trump's record so far suggests such competence in the vetting process? After all, you're the one going outside the text here.

It is illegal for a campaign to accept not just campaign donations, but anything of monetary value from a foreign national. That would include even legally obtained opposition research.

I have it from an official, unnamed, anonymous, source, close to the New York Posts three anonymous sources, familiar with the matter who said it was all a ruse.

We all saw it coming. Now for the echo chamber parrots to come in and reaffirm that it's no big deal.

New soundbites:

1) The real problem was the Russian lawyer wanting a meeting under false pretenses. (click on link)
2) That collusion is legitimate opposition research
3) That the questions into Trump collusion is "anti-American."

These are dark narratives that drag America down into a dishonorable and disgraceful place.

Twitter user: "Hey Maggie, how about I act as an anonymous source and start feeding you fake stories?"
Maggie Haberman: "People try doing that all the time. It's called vetting your sources."

Who the hell reads NY Times ??? How long will the dems hang their hats on Russia , Russia , Russia , YOU LOST MOVE ON , WTF !!!!

Apparently, the ones hanging their hats on Russia was Manafort, Kushner and Donald Trump Jr., seeing as they were so desperate for dirt on Clinton that they broke the law to try getting it.

This latest public disclosure of Trump Associates meeting with a Russian lawyer to discuss the acquisition of information unfavorable to Hillary has some in both camps, the Anti-Trumpers and the Trump Apologists, in a dizzying tizzy.

I sure don't know enough details to come to a conclusion. President Trump, his son Don Jr. and other high profile Trump Apologists continue to deny any Trump connection to Russian Collusion.

I await the outcomes of the various pending Russian Collusion investigations, particularly the one by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's.

Suzanne Massie, a writer in Russia, met with President Ronald Reagan many times between 1984 and 1987. She taught him the Russian proverb, "Доверяй, но проверяй" {Doveryai, no proveryai} (trust, but verify) advising him that "The Russians like to talk in proverbs.

And don't forget this one:

It's more important to know who the criminals are who leaked that there was a email.

who expected the source of the leak was going to be junior. he must be pissed of that ivanka is the favorite. and wasn't junior supposed to be the 'smart' one:
...

Donald Trump Jr. on Tuesday released a stunning chain of emails highlighting his conversations about setting up a campaign meeting with a Russian lawyer offering compromising information on Hillary Clinton.

“The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with [Agalarov’s] father Aras this morning and their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia would be very useful to your father,” reads one of the emails from Rob Goldstone to Trump Jr.

“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."

In one of the emails, referring to the information on Clinton, Trump Jr. told Goldstone: "If it's what you say I love it."

In another email, Goldstone suggested the information about Clinton could be given to then-candidate Donald Trump through Rhona Graff, his longtime aide.

"I can also send this info to your father via Rhona, but it is ultra sensitive so wanted to sent to you first," Goldstone wrote.
