Ford to move production of Focus from Mexico to China | TheHill

Ford Motor Co. is moving production of its Focus model to China after production at its Michigan plant ends in 2019.

The move, which Ford estimates will save it $500 million in production costs for the car, comes as the company has become a target of President Trump, who is pressuring manufacturers to keep jobs in the United States.

Ford initially planned to move production of the Focus to Mexico, but it is now scrapping that plan in favor of production in China, according to a report in Bloomberg.

What is your golden boy doing about this? This is supposedly an area he is passionate about.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

Ford said last week that it will expand in Michigan and U.S. instead of building a BILLION dollar plant in Mexico. Thank you Ford & Fiat C!9:16 AM · Jan 9, 2017

It's hard to fight market forces. I get that people were righteously angered over NAFTA, but, there was a guy running for president last year, who actually voted against NAFTA...

You know, for being this alleged anti-Communist/anti-China crusader Trump painted himself as in the campaign, he's done quite a bit more to help them than Obama...

Yes and the results speak for themselves. Ivanka had her trademark recognized by China and now she and Jared are invited to China. What else do you want?

I wondered how long it was going to take ford and other companies to re reconsider what they said they would do.

It turns out about 6 months and it is even worse for the US as the parts for the focus will likely be made in china as well.

I will say exports of cars from China to the US has occurred faster than I thought it would by about 7 years

I'm sure the Trump slurpers have a perfectly logical explanation.

One of the very sensible things that Trump said he wanted to do was to make trade deals more favorable for the American worker. Where are they? Give them at least something, Donald.

Ok- so what would President Sanders have done?

I don't know, probably nothing. Sanders rhetoric on trade deals was ambiguous other than, he was clear that he opposed all free trade deals, and he backed that up with votes in congress.

Trump explicitly told blue collar workers he was going to save their jobs with a tariff. And Trump can use the bully pulpit to hammer Ford for misbehaving. Is he doing that?

No he is not

Ford made the announcement back in early 2017 as a means to appease Trump when Trump was riding high on the election and he might have been able to push through a tariff.

Now that Trump is weak, the chances of a tariff being applied is nearly non existent (as Ford can make donations to other politicians to block it now)
