The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday that it will decide in its next term a case brought by Democratic voters in Wisconsin who argue that state Assembly districts are unconstitutionally gerrymandered to favor Republicans. The court in a separate order delayed the drawing of new state Assembly district boundaries.

This decision will apply to all states, not just in states like Wisconsin and Virginia, gerrymandered by Republicans, but also in states like Delaware and California, gerrymandered by Democrats. Diluting the representation of one group is wrong, no matter who the group is.

We may soon learn the benefit of appointing Conservative judicial nominees.

Maybe the Supreme Court could remove the practice of asking about race on the Census.

it would be wonderful if it became a lot more difficult for either side to gerrymander.

Hopefully the courts will leave electoral mapmaking where it belongs-- in the state legislatures. That would be the most democratic and constitutional thing to do.

Did you see the GOP's voter data when it was leaked? They know everything down to your magazine subscriptions. Census data is now irrelevant.

Maryland is terrible, but California took some steps that seem to be working

In 2008, Californians voted in favor of proposition 11 — the “Voter First Act” — which transferred the control of the redistricting process from the Legislatures to an independent commission comprised of citizens. California State University professor Raphael Sonenshein, author of a recently released report analyzing the success of the commission, believes independent commissions are the most efficient method to limit the influence of partisanship in the redistricting process.

At the cornerstone of a successful citizen commission is the selection process. While the state legislatures in Arizona, Idaho, and Washington nominate members of the independent commission, in California, it is the Bureau of State Audits (BSA) that has the authority to select the commissioners. The agency was chosen for it’s known independence.

After a major statewide outreach and applications from over 30,000 Californians, the BSA chose 14 commissioners, including 5 Democrats, 5 Republicans and 4 not affiliated with the two major parties. Eight of these commissioners were selected by a random drawing, the other 6 were chosen by the BSA.

Regardless of who does it, the sole purpose of gerrymandering is to cheat the system in order to over represent one group and under represent another. I don't understand why it was legal in the first place.

I've seen some of the data and what some have described as "modeled ethnicity". Have you seen anything specific to named people and their race? There is still no reason for the government to ask about race.

Seems they may be tipping their hand a bit, with the "party line" vote of 5 to 4 to "stay the lower court panel’s order that new state Assembly district lines be drawn by November 2017, before the 2018 elections." No?
