The United States Senate voted Wednesday to slap new sanctions on key sectors of Russia's economy and individuals over its interference in the 2016 U.S. election campaign and its aggression in Syria and Ukraine. The measures were attached to a bill targeting Iran.

In a joint statement, Austria's Chancellor Christian Kern and Germany's Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said it was important for Europe and the United States to form a united front on the issue of Ukraine, where Russian-based separatists have been fighting government forces since 2014.

"However, we can't accept the threat of illegal and extraterritorial sanctions against European companies," the two officials said, citing a section of the bill that calls for the United States to continue to oppose the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would pump Russian gas to Germany beneath the Baltic Sea.

 Things like this are why I'm usually only half-interested at best in what Europe thinks about what we do.

LOL

How can Germany and Austria criticize any country about anything? They've killed a billion people between them over history.

Yes. I had read Gabriel's Comments. He is SPD and working the campaign trail. There are relatively strong anti American and pro Russian forces in a number of Eu member countries. The Social Democrats have been a rather negative force against the US. It culminated under Schröder, when he allied himself with Putin in the wmd negotiations on Saddam's side. They never say openly that we are the enemy, but it is at best a loose cannon. The populations have been fed by the public media over decades using false and slanted information, which has led to deep seated distrust in the population and a quite incorrect understanding of the USA. So it only makes sense that The parties in Austria and Germany would attack the US to gain votes.

LOL

They don't like to accept that kind of criticism.

It is getting real hard to keep track of all these sides.

As for Ukraine, the US and Europe already left them dangling in the wind a few years ago.

Yes. We didn't force the issue with the Europeans. But they preferred to accept the Russian war of aggression than to do anything about security in Europe.

Germany and Austria are free to increase reliance on Russia for their energy needs at their own peril. Just remember who's hand is on that gas valve.

Typically USA arrogance!!! You want to govern the world, but you know nothing about it. Your argument has the opposite result from what you expect. Germans have killed millions, basically Russians!!! For that exact reason, they hesitate to criticize Russia moreover to try to isolate Russia to satisfy specific political party needs in USA. They feel guilty not about the USA (as you suppose) but about Russia. Russia had 26 million deaths, and the USA had 415 thousand deaths (In fact no more than 190 thousand in European Region).
My point is how unable are USA citizens to see the world outside their perspectives

FM Gabriel is preparing for the German federal elections in September. Ergo, he takes an opposite position of Merkel.

The United States saved the world from fascism, then from communism. You're welcome.

Pretty effing hilarious, actually. The left in this country want Russia punished for interfering in our elections and the left in Europe are saying, "Hold on. Not so fast."

Trump haters. Ignore them.

I don't think many Germans loose much sleep over the wwii dead. Even in the 1950s you probably would have found little remorse for the dead French, Poles or Russians outside of formal breast beating speeches by politicians. Anger at the prisoners being kept in Siberia of the Dresden bombing, yes. But, it was the nazis, you see.

The Europeans have a habit of accepting any transgression to avoid taking action to stop the transgression.

Not much different than ignoring the petulant puppy's poops on the carpet.

Ignoring the problem does not make it go away.

Stockholm Syndrome?

Hasn't anyone reminded the American Left that the "80's called and said they want their foreign policy back"?

nah, that's just more myopic american hubris and arrogance, don could manage to drive germany to see russia as a more stable partner than the us.

o . . . K.

You are probably quite right about perspective.

One perspective you may be missing is the one regarding NATO and the need for an alliance to blunt aggression from the East of Europe.

Let's see... What world power(s) is located to the East of Europe?

Heh. I dunno. On it's face it's extremely poor judgement. Didn't Putin already threaten to turn the gas off to Europe a few years back right in the middle of winter?

It's always popular to "beard the Lion", but if the chips are down, who will show up to help?

The Germans know what side the toast is buttered on.

Yeah? That's what we thought about Saddam and Osama too.
