French police have shot a man outside the Notre Dame in Paris after he tried to attack them with a hammer, according to the interior ministry. He was also in possession of two knives. One policeman was lightly injured in the attack.
The main square has been evacuated and a police operation is underway. Paris police say the situation is now "under control".

Anti-terror prosecutors have launched an investigation meaning they consider the attack terror-related. Notre Dame: Man shot by French police after 'terror' attack with hammer and knives

Security needs to be doubled at every landmark/historical site.

I was in Paris last year and the Police/military are everywhere. I think the speed in which he was taken down testifies to that, same as with the Louvre attacker recently.

Security should be stepped up. Thank you for not making this a "kill all the Muslims" thread.

They sure nailed him good, didn't they? Come to think of it, those officers really cut that man down to size, as well!

Defensive strategies don't work, in the long term.

Oh, that must be why we have had so many hijackings since September 2001. So much for better internal security.

Immigration should be handled better. Helping those who cannot protect themselves is an admirable goal, but without proper background checks, you risk national security, and are likely to bring along many of the people that preyed upon the very refugees you are trying to help.

Since the early 70's hijackings on domestic flights were rarely heard of and that was before all the "take off your shoes and let me grab your junk" stuff.

A rather silly idea since the vast majority of these terror attacks were done by natural born citizens of the countries in question.

...That's a fair point.

Most of what I had in mind was Sweden's so-called "rape epidemic." A very large portion of the rape victims have been immigrants and refugees - hence, background checks to keep the wolves from getting in with the sheep.

Don't get me wrong, the TSA is about as useful as tits on a life vest, but there have been several attempted terrorist attacks on planes that have been thwarted by various intelligence agencies.

We haven't had any incidents on airliners? Are you sure?

Not a single successful one - there have certainly been miserable failures, but not one success.

Ah, but there were successful penetrations. Yes?

The failures were because the terrorists were incompetent, not because security measures stopped them. See the difference?

And there were preventions as well as penetrations. As for those penetrations, many of them were stopped by air marshals. In 2001, there were a grand total of 33 air marshals keeping an eye on all of the flights in the U.S. That number has gone up significantly since then.

Yep-- and those people can't trace their family history in the country 300 years.
Second generation folks who reject the culture of the country of which they were born.
The vetting process is indeed important and its failure can have results not being seen for a couple of decades.

When it comes to protecting their own interests, Leftists have no qualms about being aggressive - they'll even take their protests into the middle of other people's political rallies to assert their political rights over someone else's.

But as soon as someone suggests an aggressive strategy against terrorism, then suddenly left his want meekness to be the best policy.

That's what I hear, but not what I see. Obama bombed ten times more people than Bush, in three more countries than Bush. I'd say that's fairly aggressive.

Do you have a point, or are you just picking a fight with relatively liberal posters.

(Of course, compared to you Dick Cheney is "relatively" liberal).

I'm asking a legitimate question - what plan to these liberals have for making society more secure - or do they just seek to pay lip-service to the problem, while society and safety go to hell in a handbasket?

1) Terrorist attack occurs
2) Politicians all say "we will not be afraid! we will not be divided!"
3) Back to business as usual
4) Another terrorist attack occurs
...
Endless repetitive cycle, with more continuing to be killed. And terrorists aren't just sitting around - they're innovating new ways to attack, find new means, methods, targets, etc.

What we need is a #DayWithoutBodyguards so that all politicians can know what it's like to be unprotected in the same way that the general public are. It's rather hypocritical to put on some brave face when you're hiding behind a phalanx of personal security that everyone else doesn't have. It might change their attitudes about the problem.
