Sweden isn't even an ex-Soviet bloc. Can anybody think what might have happened, perhaps in recent history, that could have emboldened Putin to speak in this way? I'm coming up empty here. Anybody?

I doubt russia will do anything about it, but then again they got real pissy when they were about to have their crimea lease yanked out from under them.

Russia is feeling horribly threatened, nato has cornered them in every corner of europe, and they keep moving troops to the russian border. However this has little to do with russian security and more of them in general trying to push back at nato expansion, as sweden has little to scare the russians about on land or sea. Russias biggest sea threats in the region border them and have their port bottlenecked. On land it is ukraine being their biggest threat, sweden is not close to them land wise and by sea they would be stopped by other baltic states before sweden had a chance to do anything.

That will never happen. The country is bigger than the man or the office. The US will always be relevant.

He is saying that he doesn't like NATO and thinks the Eu is more the type of adversary he would like guarding Europe.

It's the ones that do run their mouths that feel like they need to prove something. Civilian or military.

As long as the US controls the strongest military force in the world we could put a Kardashian as President and we would still be relevant.

Like someone else mentioned, I would rather the US be more like Canada. The benefits of being irrelevant is that people don't pay much attention to you, comes in handy with terrorists. Sadly, we are past the point that we can fade back into obscurity.

Well, as a 50% Swede in my blood lines, the fire and passion of the Swedes is understood. Throw a Swede into a crowded and otherwise peaceful room and it's understood that the Swede will incite pandemonium.

This is exactly the same effect realized by inserting a retired Librarian into a room filled with accountants.

Obviously Putin, aware of this, fears that invasion from the Swedish front spells certain doom for Russia.

Russia invaded the Ukraine, annexed Crimea, and some sanctions were issued-- sanctions which continue. Other than that- nothing comes to mind.

Perhaps Russia shouldn't have been so aggressive towards its neighbors in the past several decades if they didn't want those neighbors to seek protection from Russia.

I can only guess its because even you know that Putin is taking advantage of Trumps buffoonery. on a related side note, when I order a White Russian (Im currently enjoying the splendors the Riviera Maya) I call it a Donald Trump. As the goal seems to be ´get the customers really drunk really fast´ I have to tell them ´a little vodka´ so they say poquito Melania. Even my wife laughed and she never laughs at my jokes. to be honest, I dont tell them poquito Melania for her Donald Trumps. good times.

Interesting how Trump doesn't like NATO either. It's like if putin doesn't like something... then trump doesn't like it either. What an amazing coincidence.
