Nation's biggest states could short-circuit Trump's vow to leave the Paris Agreement

Re: Nation's biggest states could short-circuit Trump's vow to leave the Paris Agreem

I guess math is really like magic to the left

Regardless of the math, it's not the problem of Republicans any longer. Trump signaled to the rest of the world that the United States that its leadership is no longer necessary, and now blue states and cities are signaling that Republicans' leadership on this issue is no longer necessary. Republican have fought and screamed that government doesn't work, they fought to prove it, and now they've proven it: they can't govern.

And without using Federal funds.

I'm sure you Trump supporters will try and spin this as a victory for Trump. But clearly the big Cheeto miscalculated yet again. Numerous major corporations have cone out against this move.

What a ****ing tool he is

These 76 cities just adopted the Paris climate deal in defiance of Trump

Why should the USA be the world leader to begin with?

Let Europe have a turn.

Ah, that's what you get for using dated sources.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/18/world/asia/china-coal-power-plants-pollution.html

I look forward to seeing how you move the goalposts.

Had you bothered to read the article I posted

Of the*2,400 coal-fired power plants under construction or being planned around the world, 1,171 will be built in China.

So China canceled 103 plants out of 1171, how many does that mean they are still building?

I'll wait, I know math isn't your thing. Just a hint it's more that 10 so you might have to take your shoes off.

Re: Nation's biggest states could short-circuit Trump's vow to leave the Paris Agreem

It's politics.
Most people protesting this move are doing so are 1. ignorant of the details of the Paris Accord and 2. dislike Trump regardless of what he does.

The real reason Republicans are happy Trump left the Paris Accord.

Nobody's buying the line that there was any deeper reasoning to his move.

Trump, for once, actually made a decision and because you don't like the decision you are claiming that he is not governing.

You must really be off your meds today.

And yet they're still investing over double what we are in renewable energy. So they're canceling what coal plants they can and are investing a lot more. So all that you really have to show is that we're further along than they are.

We tried that, twice. didn't turn out so well

Deeper reason?
I didn't suggest there was.

It's politics, nothing else.
Whether or not we stayed or left, it virtually changed nothing.
It was done for optics, which ironically, was the reason we entered it.

Yup. Something Republicans are very bad at understanding is that when you're not at the table, you're on the menu.

That was the original claim, so that's exactly what I was trying to show.

With state and city funds.

You're more than welcome to you city and state funds as much as they want. And those CEOs are more than happy to donate as much as they like from their own private coffers.

Well since nobody actually believes Trump left the Paris Agreement except to "stick it to libs," and since no Republicans actually support his decision except for any other reason, it's disingenuous for Republicans to use other arguments.

So your position is we shouldn't be in the Paris Agreement because there are countries that haven't caught up to us.

Brilliant.

You realize that using state and city funds is much the same as using federal funds.

No my position is that we shouldn't commit to anything. If we want to lessen emissions, good, but let's not lock ourselves into a position that could hurt us economically. Which is exactly why Obama didn't bind this treaty through the Senate because he knew it would be harmful to get legally bound to it but he could still get all the kudos for signing it.

I don't care what Republicans are doing.
They lie, just like other politicians lie.

The greater issue is, that the Paris Accords are a non thing anyway and it doesn't make any difference whether we stay or leave.

It's about the environment though, you'll get the benefits even if you don't admit they are worthwhile and you cling to your purse. That's why everyone joined, to avoid being unethical.

And clearly that's what Republicans have committed to: nothing. Why are you in this thread, exactly?

Does it bother you that I have posted in "your" thread?

Re: Nation's biggest states could short-circuit Trump's vow to leave the Paris Agreem

The US already commits vastly more money, research, and development into clean energy than other nations. It's not even close.
So why should we commit billions of dollars (that the other countries won't) into something WE'RE ALREADY DOING?.

No, the fund was for developing nations to help them transition to clean energy as they develop. The idea being while the the big polluters are the issue today, unresolved as everyone else grows they will be the big issues of tomorrow.

There is plenty to debate there (how effective those are, what oversight, etc.), but it's not really something we were already doing.

Not at all. I just can't figure out what your point in being in the thread is. So far as I can tell, it seems like you're still trying to figure out what your position is, and you're just spitballing until you find something that works.

I have literally outlined exactly what my position is, I really can't make it any clearer.

Re: Nation's biggest states could short-circuit Trump's vow to leave the Paris Agreem

Full headline: An alliance of the nation's biggest states could short-circuit Trump's vow to leave the Paris Agreement

As Trump continues to abandon global leadership, states and cities appear willing to pick up the slack. As of now three states -- Washington, California and New York -- have created an alliance to commit to the goals of the Paris Accord, and the governor of Oregon has likewise released a statement committing to it, so she'll probably join in soon enough. One could reasonably expect other states such as Massachusetts and Vermont to join in short time as well. In fact, if one were to look at the list of states by gdp, the largest ones are mostly blue and could help to bring the country as a whole up to the levels of the Paris Accord without the help of the poorest states, which with only a few exceptions are invariably red.

Additionally, 85 mayors from major cities around the country have committed to the Paris Accord. These cities are reasonably spread throughout the country, red and blue alike.

Macron expressed his disappointment with "the United States Federal Government," pointedly observing that it was Trump and not the American people who approved of pulling out of the Paris Accord, and he may be right.

It can't be understated how important this is to the economy of the United States (to say nothing of the environment), because leaders of European countries (France, Germany and Italy) have responded to Trump's declaration to "renegotiate" the Paris Accord by vowing that all further negotiations are off the table. What this means is that as we continue to isolate ourselves from global trade and military alliances, other nations will most likely put in place environmental standards as a precondition for future trade deals.

If we want to fight global warming, why do we need an agreement that puts us further in debt supporting other countries. This agreement has no benefit whatsoever for the U.S. It is a very bad deal. Trump is exercising international leadership, not abandoning it. If you want your money to go to other countries, write them a check.
