Donald Trump Says Decision on Paris Agreement Coming 'Next Week'

Justin Worland
May 27. 2017

President Donald Trump said Saturday he would make a decision on the Paris Agreement on climate change "next week" following months of intense speculation and lobbying on both sides of the issue. The announcement came as Trump departed this year's G-7 summit in Italy without endorsing the landmark global warming deal which has support from nearly 200 countries, a move that put him in conflict with his counterparts from the world's other leading democracies. Trump promised on the campaign trail to "cancel" the Paris Agreement arguing that it hurts U.S. energy interests, but actually exiting the deal has proven more complicated than Trump portrayed it on the campaign trail. The issue has divided his closest advisers with a group of hard-liners including Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt and senior adviser Steve Bannon arguing for withdrawal. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, along with Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, have pushed for him to remain in the deal. The agreement also has support from many corporations, including in the coal, oil and gas industries. Leaders across the globe have insisted repeatedly that they will continue to implement the Paris Agreement if the U.S. withdraws. Indeed, the G-7 statement included a commitment not just to keeping the deal alive but to supporting developing countries in their efforts to address global warming, a key component that had been threatened by U.S. intransigence in the past.

Hard to read Trump here. But this is the same Trump whose budget slashes the US/EPA by 31% and has signed an order for the EPA to dismantle environmental protections.

I'm sure someone pulled DJT to one side and gave him a "ten minute" breakdown of the issue and now he is up to speed on the Paris Accord and all related issues.

There is a danger here that the other political leaders explained to Trump how much more money the Government could bring
in he played the game.

Same thing all other politicians do on legislation so nothing new here.

I'd take Clinton and Obama vs GWB and DJT on awareness of issues any day.

Somehow I don't doubt that. Funny thing is that I wasn't talking about either one of them.

Tell me, how many politicians actually read Obamacare? That's a rhetorical question of course as we already know the answer. None. They all get the cliff notes from their subordinates who they make read the legislation that is put out.

Many politicians didn't read the AHCA either before the house passed it.

and the same one who said that climate change was a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese to keep us from being competitive.

Many politicians didn't read the AHCA either before the house passed it.

That strikes me as more a symptom of the problem than the problem itself. The real problem is that for many of these people it doesn't matter if they read a bill because they don't understand the underlying policy issues anyway. One of my favorite anecdotes after the House passed the AHCA:

After admitting to CNN that he did not read the House bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) told the Buffalo News that he was unaware the bill would nix funding for a health care program in New York.

When a reporter for the Buffalo News told Collins that the American Health Care Act would eliminate funding for an optional program adopted only by New York and Minnesota called the Essential Plan, Collins replied, “Explain that to me.”

Sitting at a desk with furrowed brow reading the AHCA wouldn't fix that Congressman's fundamental ignorance of health policy and what the words in the bill actually mean.

Same with Trump's decision on Paris.

The US should pull out of the Paris agreement. Let other countries handicap their economies while China, India, and others just belt out emissions with disregard for much. Greenhouse emissions won't be solved by countries cutting or setting max caps, it will be solved by finding alternative energy sources. For every western country imposing caps there will be a poor or developing country increasing their emissions.

Every country in the world has signed the Paris Agreement, and 147 nations (including China and India) have ratified the accord.

Each country sets its own nationally determined contributions (NDCs = percent of greenhouse gas reduction) to begin in 2020 and progress is reviewed every 5 years. The NDCs are not legally binding. There is no way to force target compliance and no enforcement if the set NDC target is not met. The participating nations do however agree to allow outside monitors to sample national emissions levels on a regular basis. The Paris Agreement is not intended to eliminate all industrial emissions. Its goal is to cut back on the most serious and egregious emissions.

The Paris Agreement is a win-win to reduce air pollution on a global scale which is beneficial to the planet Earth and all of its living creatures.
