Probably the only people who know where the subs are is the skippers driving them.

Don't be an idiot. To use a sub for attack, the prez tells the generals who relay the messages. Trump doesn't have a map with little submarine magnets on it like in the movies. At best he can all up a targeting report accurate for anything within around 12,000 miles.

The prez tells the general where he wants the subs - because the constitution is strict on civilian control of the military. He knows where they are because he send them where he wants them.

President Trump seems to have been struck by the SSGN's, judging by the fact he has mentioned more than once, apparently referring to the Michigan, how formidable one of our subs is. I wonder if he even knew they existed. I hope his military advisors have made clear to him that even though the SSGN's are impressive, it would take a lot more than direct hits by 150-plus 1,000 lb. bombs to pull the teeth of North Korea's military.

As an aside, the strongest suit of an SSGN is that is almost impossible to detect and carries cruise missiles which are very hard to detect in flight. The fact it was sent there suggests it could be one part of a U.S. plan to position a force near North Korea that is capable of disarming it in a surprise strike. That would probably take well over 1,000 bombs of various sizes, striking as many as 100 targets. These targets would probably be airfields, antiaircraft missile sites, air defense headquarters, all facilities associated with ballistic missiles, important government buildings, and possibly sites where nuclear bombs are stored.

It seems to me that if a force like that were in place--and North Korea would have no way to defend against it--it would make Kim much more cautious. Once North Korea had lost control of its airspace, every other military asset in the country, including ground forces, would be not much more than a target for bombs. The U.S. force now in place in South Korea is no threat to Kim. It was designed to deter another invasion like the one in 1950, which he has no intention of making anyway. A much different force is needed to cow him. It's not necessary to want the force to be used to recognize its power to intimidate, just as it's not necessary to want someone killed to recognize the power of a gun pointed at his head to make him cooperative.
