How to look really guilty, chapter 27: After firing the Director of the FBI who was heading an investigation into you, be sure to undermine the special counselor assigned to investigate you.

The Trump administration is exploring whether it can use an obscure ethics rule to undermine the special counsel investigation into ties between President Donald Trump's campaign team and Russia, two people familiar with White House thinking said on Friday.

Trump has said that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's hiring of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the investigation "hurts our country terribly."

Within hours of Mueller's appointment on Wednesday, the White House began reviewing the Code of Federal Regulations, which restricts newly hired government lawyers from investigating their prior law firm’s clients for one year after their hiring, the sources said.

I was worried about this. The special counselor is appointed and answerable to the Justice Department, which of course is answerable to the President. It seemed fantastically unlikely that Trump wouldn't throw a stick of dynamite into an independent investigation if he could.

For context, remember that Trump claimed that Judge Curiel was not fit to preside over the Trump University case because he was of Mexican descent. The context being that it really shouldn't be surprising to anybody that he will discredit anybody that will investigate him or has the potential to rule against him.

Trump may be a really awful President, but if there's one thing he knows how to do, it's survive.

Wow, now we're using "two people familiar with White House thinking" as sources. What's next - "some guy who likes white houses?" "a woman who once toured the oval office?" "a person intimately familiar with people named Donald?"

We don't need no stinking "proof"

The extent to which this is driving you nuts is its own reward.

Ditto if it was false, for his haters, point?

There's always going to be people who will never let something go, but most reasonable Americans will be happy to drop the Russia conclusion thing after a proper investigation. I will likely never stop hating Trump, but he gives me a new reason every day. I don't need the Russian thing for that.

Actually, I find it rather amusing. I wonder if anyone else "familiar with White House thinking" will chime in.

Me too! I plan on posting every news story I can find citing anonymous sources because of how crazy it's driving Trump supporters. If I had only known the entertainment value your reactions to these articles provided earlier I would have starting doing it a lot sooner.

I believe they call that "trolling" - to each his own, I suppose.

Next time I post a story by the New York Times or Washington Times citing anonymous sources, feel free to report me.

1. It's not democrats leaking, it's people close to Trump and in the WH. Remember, your party career types also didn't want Trump, even they knew better.
2. It's leaking like crazy because people are worried, and because Trump has no idea how to run or staff a white house, and commands no respect at all apparently. It's also *huge* news right now. Little boy Trump has a critical mass going right now, it's unstoppable, and it's mainly his fault.

Journalism works this way, always has. Only reason you are all so nutty is because 20% of them may not pan out. OK. 100% of Trump's campaign rhetoric didn't pan out. Hell, 80% of his in-office remarks don't pan out. Get on the ****ing right side of history you fools.

Donald Trump employing ethics.

Riiiiiiiiight.

Sounds like a really good way to destroy what little credibility the orange orangutan has left.

If true, I hope he is impeached.

I'm one of those people. I'd let it go after a proper investigation that finds no wrong doing.

Then again, I have confidence that another opportunity would come along shortly. :)

Impeachment is only at the end of this rainbow if Democrats sweep both houses in 2018. The most realistic scenario until then is for the investigations and Trump's repeated scandals (of his own making) to essentially paralyze the Republican agenda, thereby making them unelectable next year.

I keep having some semblance of hope that the GOP will grow a pair of testicles, but they have pussed out every week.

They won't. I've had to learn this lesson repeatedly throughout 2017. I remember the first lesson back in January (or February, I forget the exact date and I don't feel like googling it) when Trump first enacted the Muslim Ban, causing chaos at all the international airports across the United States. I was certain the Republicans in congress would step in to do something. I remember painfully the sinking feeling I got when I read the reaction of House Republicans: "Yeah, that's cool." That was the first time that I thought, "There are no good guys."

The last lesson was the McCarthy/Ryan story from a few days ago, as well as all the "strong" Republicans who talked of how "troubling" and "concerning" Trump's actions were when he shared confidential info with the Russians, and then did nothing. These guys are all in. As Ryan said, "We're family."

We can pretty much disregard whatever you post at this point.
