Whoever told Trump to shut his mouth must be feeling pretty good right about now... /sarcasm

White House lawyers have begun researching impeachment procedures in an effort to prepare for what officials still believe is a distant possibility that President Donald Trump could have to fend off attempts to remove him from office, two people briefed on the discussions tell CNN.

They're getting a head start on 2018.

Yeah, it's game over in 2018. Once all this scandal started I have always predicted Trump wouldn't last past the 2018 elections, especially if dems win back something.

A week ago (or a few days ago? My sense of time is all messed up) I would have said that impeachment was coming inside of six months, but after the story of McCarthy and Ryan came out I quickly came to my senses. The fact is that if Trump fled the country in a miniature submarine and defected to Russia, the Republican congress would allow Trump to continue leading the nation from Moscow.

If the people want impeachment it's going to come by way of Democrats sweeping both houses of Congress. No ifs, ands or buts.

"One outside attorney close to the office of White House counsel Don McGahn cast doubt on impeachment preparations, saying it wouldn't be something McGahn would authorize." from the link.

how the hell do we know who to believe? This is getting worse than stupid.

That will be hard to do, but that only means that Democrats have no excuses either. My party messed up by nominating an imbecile. If the dems can't rally their base around this, then they are a lost cause as well.

I agree.

Well one would assume that any lawyers worth their paychecks would research all possibilities

I hope Trump unifies Congress against him, but I agree Ryan is not helping things with any potential Republican backlash.

In 2017, I've had to learn the hard way, over and over and over again, that there are basically no good guys in the Republican party in Congress.

Something truly monumental will still have to happen before Republicans abandon Trump. While everything that's happened up til now has been extraordinary, it's still not enough for them to abandon ship. The reason for that is simple: support for Trump from Republican voters is still at about 80%. That is a drop from before, but not enough for Republican congressmen to risk a challenge to Trump and the enraged voters who will surely primary each and every one of them as punishment.

The RCP average is at 39.7% (though keep in mind that the most crazy scandals have happened this week and the polls haven't reflected that, yet), and you won't really get an idea of that drop eating into his base until it hits 30-35%.

Ann Coulter was a start, and maybe budged that .3% down, but I'm not sure she was anywhere prominent (like Hannity radio show) when she said what she said about how disappointed in Trump she was. She didn't get any backlash from the right which was shocking. Van Jones said that if more people start to back away like her we could see some real damage soon, but it might just be a one off.

The canary in the coal mine is Fox News. If they turn against Trump, that's it. Stick a fork in him. We won't need to wait for Democrats to do the job.

Well most witch hunts usually end with someone getting burned at the stake. I guess actual evidence is not needed. Lets show the world how truly sick we are.

Did I miss something in the news cycle? What did Ryan and McCarthy do or say?

I remember towards the end of the GWB Admin, a lot of pundits on Fox were blasting him including O'Reilly.
