WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is close to completing a series of arms deals for Saudi Arabia totaling more than $100 billion, a senior White House official said on Friday, a week ahead of President Donald Trump's planned visit to Riyadh.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the arms package could end up surpassing more than $300 billion over a decade to help Saudi Arabia boost its defensive capabilities while still maintaining U.S. ally Israel's qualitative military edge over its neighbors.

Didnt Saudi Arabia do 9/11???

We better be getting our money up front, because the money is running out, and I have maintained for nearly a decade that the kingdom is on thin ice.

Once the ability to pump and export you mean.....I we reading a few years ago that the Saudis have managed the field very poorly, that a lot of the oil that was gettable with current tech at a reasonable price they are going to have to leave in the ground waiting for either a much higher price or better tech, apparently the predictions for capacity going forwards are rather grim, and they are running low on money now.

B-but aren't they the holiest land of Islam - you know, that religion the "liberals" insist on defending at every opportunity, because it can do no wrong? I've certainly never heard any criticisms against beloved Saudi from the "enlightened, moderate" Muslim masses.

That's why liberals insist it's necessary to import thousands of people from that region into America, like wise Merkel has done.

Individuals born there did. But a few fanatical individuals do not mean the whole country and it's government were behind it.

They weren't radicalized in SA either.

not for the PC crowd but i'm afraid i'm going to have to be controversial:

if America was truly serious about fighting Islamic terrorism they wouldn't be arming the Saudis (the biggest sponsors of terrorism around the globe) with $100 billion on new weapon systems, they should be dropping $100 billion worth of JDAMs via B-52s on the KSA ... after all correct me if i'm wrong 15 of the 19 9/11 terrorists were Saudi nationals

........It is not publicly revealed until 2006 that President Bush secretly engaged Saudi Arabia’s Prince Bandar to conduct the delicate negotiations with the Chinese over the US aircraft and crew. Bandar, a close friend of the Bush family and a senior Saudi official, is an unusual choice for the negotiations, but Bandar has a special relationship with the Chinese due to Saudi Arabia’s various deals to purchase arms and missiles, and the increasing reliance of China on Saudi oil. Bandar, never a modest man, considers it a personal favor from the Chinese to have them release the 24 American hostages. Bandar also oversees the wording of the American “apology” to the Chinese for the incident, where the US apologizes for entering Chinese airspace to make an emergency landing, but does not apologize for the E-3’s legitimate intelligence-gathering mission. Secretary of State Colin Powell, nominally in charge of the US negotiations, only finds out about Bandar’s efforts through the NSA’s monitoring of Bandar’s phone calls to the Chinese; when he calls Bandar to congratulate him on his success, Bandar snaps to the Secretary of State, “How the hell do you know?”.......

The Saudi Arabian government didn't.

No, but Saudis did. Funny how the country was left off the travel ban list...

Also UAE, Lebanon and Egypt.

All of which have produced terrorists that have attacked the US, unlike the banned countries. The level of ineptitude by this administration is jaw-dropping.

So Trump successfully surrounded them as a form of intimidation. Those countries now know to straighten up and fly right.

Do you understand, "threat assessments" based on actionable intelligence? Those threat assessments aren't determined by historical events, alone. If they were there would be an infinite travel ban placed on Japan and Germany.

The threat, now, has been determined by the intel community to be coming from one of the seven countries listed on the travel ban. The latest attacks in Europe have been executed by people from those seven countries. Currently AQ and/or ISIS has a foothold in six of those seven countries.

Why isn't Pakistan on the list? Why isn't Egypt?

That makes no sense.

They're not surrounded by anything.
