Trump praises Australian universal health care system at meeting with prime minister

President Donald Trump had kind words for the Australian health care system at a meeting with that country's prime minister Thursday, just hours after Republican members of Congress succeeded in passing their efforts to roll back the Affordable Care Act.

“We have a failing health care -- I shouldn't say this to our great gentleman and my friend from Australia because you have better health care than we do," said Trump.

The remarks were quickly seized upon by progressive critics of the president, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, who have long advocated for a government-run universal health care option, similar to Australia's Medicare system.

"The president has just said it. That's great. Let's take a look at the Australian health care system, and let's move," said Sanders shortly afterward in an interview on MSNBC. "Maybe he wants to take a look at the Canadian health care system or systems throughout Europe. Thank you, Mr. President. Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country does."

Can you say, HOLY ****! I'll bet you can.

Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday that Trump was "simply being complimentary of the prime minister, and I don't think it was much more than that."
(. . .)
just over an hour later, . . . "Of course the Australians have better healthcare than we do -- everybody does. ObamaCare is dead! But our healthcare will soon be great," wrote Trump.

Every other developed nation has basic universal health care with lower costs and better outcomes for public health than the United States, yet the 'conservatives' are unwilling to accept the facts.

Yep.

Because "Freedom" or something.

Which basically means a gigantic HMO should be able to **** you as hard as they want without lube.

Hardcore Republicans, especially on this board have a habit of being so unabashedly pro business as to cause extreme harm to themselves in this misguided view of what Freedom means, I mean **** just look at those who support the very transparent attempt by corporations trying to tear down Internet Neutrality to **** everyone.

I think it is more than that: they see economic hardship as being moral failure

I get motion sickness trying to follow what our President believes.

He doesn't believe anything. He hasn't got a policy or platform.
See my sig...

I don't even bother. I doubt he's sincere about any of his beliefs.

So he stands for nothing.

That's about how much he is worth: nothing

Australia also has $17 AUS minimum wage. Many americans don't know this but you can get a year long work visa to go to Australia, travel around for a year working in hotels or restaurants and actually SAVE thousands of dollars while traveling. Most of the people I met made around $20-25 AUS an hour. And they generally don't hate having you there because the Aussie 18-24 year olds do the same thing in other countries.

Having traveling around Australia, there are a lot of cultural similarities to the US. They have a bit of the Wild West thing with cultural heroes like Ned Kelly. The rural areas are nigh indistinguishable from rural America except *way* less churches.

They do pay a good bit in taxes though.

Lol. Even when Trump says something libs agree with, they criticize him.

Trump is right. Socialized medicine would be preferable to what we have. Not because socialized medicine is the way to go, but that our system is such a mess.

They're criticizing him for not being able to hold a firm position on almost anything. Having a wildcard as our President is not a good thing. There is "evolving" on an issue, which most politicians do over time for personal or political reasons. And then there is bouncing around like a ball in a pinball machine because you lack any conviction whatsoever.

Trumpisms abound like tax cuts that are said to be revenue neutral but must be paid for by better trade agreements. ;)
