Oil is a finite resource. Can we agree on that? I don't know who you were reading that said 5 years of reserves. Doesn't sound like a legit source. That said, there have been additional discoveries of oil, that are prolonging the inevitable. Everything you said about the value of oil is absolutely true, which is all the more reason, that once the decline in reserves starts, it will be devastating for the world. And you seem to agree that we should conserve oil, as much as we can. So it sounds like we're in agreement on most of this. The only disagreement I had was that you mentioned something about Liberals total abstention from oil. Personally, I am far left of Democrats (Environmentally). I have a wind turbine and solar panels for electricity, and my heating and cooling of my home is provided by passive solar and earth-berming respectively. For 30 years, prior to retirement, I commuted to work by bicycle, year-round. So I was/am about as oil-free as anybody, but I still use oil. That's why I said your statement was "deranged".
While oil is very probably a finite resource, we are far from the bottom of the Earth's oil barrel.
Your post exhibits the multi-demensional approach to energy with a nod to the value of oil with an acknowledgement of the possibilities presented by other technologies.
That said, there were a number of points surrounding the one you plucked out of my post. I'm always frustrated by this practice.
The 5 year supply in 1970 was from a very unreliable source: American Media.
It was based on the 5 year plans presented by the oil companies in their business plans. Like almost everything published in our media, this demonstrates more about the publisher's ignorance or their agendas than the topic they are writing about.
Candles were replaced by whale oil was replaced by kerosene was replaced by the electric grid is being replaced by solar.
Candle light was replaced by lantern light was replaced by incandescents was replaced by LED's.
Fossil fuels will be replaced and it will occur because it will make sense to change over to the successor fuels.
In your case, it made sense for you to change today. Otherwise, you would not have changed. Everyone will travel that same path of logic at the time it makes sense for them to do so.
Right now, the Greenies that I was talking about are trying to end the reliable and adaptable energy fuel for the dream land in which they live.
THAT was the point of the sentence that you thought was deranged.
