FoxNews: US murders concentrated in 5 percent of counties

The Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) said in a new report that there is a “geographical concentration” of murders, with 68 percent of killings occurring in just 5 percent of the nation’s counties. The homicides also tend to be concentrated to relatively small pockets of those counties, the report said.

One of the most interesting findings in the report is that areas with the highest gun ownership rates have low murder rates.

Color me "not-shocked" that the maps look like a red Democratic voter heat map. I would expect that counties with the highest levels of gun control would have the least amount of gun murders. Not a chance...

It is almost as if cities have more people than rural areas.

True fact: Places with the highest concentration of churches have the greatest number of crimes. Obviously, religion causes violence. Right? Fun with statistics. lol

Those are per 100,000 rates...ooops

what this proves is the following

1) gun control laws don't control violent crime

2) areas run by Democrats tend to have the highest rates of violent crime because Democrat politicians appeal to those who tend to reside in poor urban areas.

3) a high proportion of armed individuals in a given area doesn't increase crime

Not much to dispute here. Gun ownership rates -- at least legal gun ownership -- and crime rates don't correlate.

It's an interesting fun fact but a long way from proving anything. I'd bet those counties and sections of counties are very poor as well. So then which is it? Lack of gun ownership or high concentration of poor people?

Thank you for drawing reasonable conclusions based on the data presented and not leaping to huge flights of fancy.

Those weren't rates -- those were raw numbers. Here's some recent per-capita stats.

I stand corrected. However, the author does note the following:

The 2014 US murder rate was 4.4 per 100,000 people. Exclude the worst 1% of counties and the national murder rate drops to 3.4 per 100,000 people. If the worst 5% of counties are removed, the US murder rate would be 2.56 per 100,000.

Actually the largest concentration of churches would likely be found in small town bible belt states, Utah, etc.

What do you suppose might be a legit correlative factor?

There's a huge problem here in treating the United States as a single country. There's so much variability in population density, income level, attitude to firearms, firearm laws, that trying to draw any conclusions relative to guns and gun deaths from the US wide data is pretty useless in my opinion.

As a simple example I have homes in downstate NY and Vermont. NY has strict gun laws and a relatively high homicide rate. Vermont has very lax gun laws and a homicide rate that rivals many countries with strict gun laws.

Pray tell, how does the government know how many gun owners are in a certain area? [whether it's legal or not]

The counties with highest murder rates are all blue.

You lose either way

Guns don't kill people, voting Democrat kills people!

It is almost as if cities have more people than rural areas.

Thank goodness then that there's an Electoral College to keep these murderous cesspools from imposing their miserable distorted way of life on everyone else.

Thx. There's lots of reasons why more guns and less crime might go together. One obvious one is that large cities tend of have stricter gun laws but also more poverty and poverty might well be driving the murder rate.

Well, I also suspect that to lawfully own a gun you can't be a felon or have sever mental problems so you're already starting with a more lawful group of people.
