GOP repeal bill would unravel protection for sick Americans

Pre-existing conditions (like age and tobacco use) are simply actuarial risk factors which are commonly used to set premium rate tiers by insurance companies. What has yet to be explained is why some (like age and tobacco use) are considered "good" while others (like diabetes or obesity) are considered "bad" under PPACA. High risk pools are not a bad idea - each insurance company must accept its "fair share" (based on its share of the total market) of the least desirable (those with the highest acturail risk) at a predefined maximum premium rate.

There are a lot of points to cover there, but in general terms that covers the political question.

The House GOP continues to try to revive the dead AHCA. The leadership thinks they've found a way to get the hard right onboard, and all it requires is doing exactly what they promised they wouldn't do.

I'm sure the Tuesday Group and the Senate GOP (not to mention the public) are going to love this!

Since government has proven itself incompetent at handling health insurance, anything they do is destined for failure. Since Obamacare helps thousands of people and hurts millions of people, there is no logical reason to do anything other than get rid of it. Just repeal it and move on.

There are some things government can do to help reduce the cost of medical care. They should do that and get out of the insurance business.

This appears to be the only GOP argument in favor of the AHCA. Curious, that.

I didn't say health care is a dead issue (it never will be), I said the American Health Care Act is a dead piece of legislation.

It's been seven years and the GOP hasn't come up with an alternative. The 'best' they've come up with is this piece of garbage to price or kick the old (by which I mean anyone in their late 40s or older), sick, risky, or rural off of their insurance. I don't even know what they're trying to solve with this stuff at this point. Each new iteration of their legislation seems to the result of increasingly masochistic dares.

That is what they did. People who were on Medicare are still on Medicare. People in employer-based coverage are still in employer-based coverage.

Booting out the sick, old, or rural could lower premiums for those left behind, though it doesn't lower costs nor does it do much in the way of solving anything.

Obamacare is a piece of garbage, and millions still aren't being helped by it. They can't even afford the premiums.

Raising premiums on the old, rural, or sick is your solution?

That's a bull**** leftwing talking point. You're dismissed.

You seem to not know much about what's on the table here.

AHCA changes age rating to 5:1 for older Americans (higher premiums for them).

It's now on the brink of eliminating pre-existing condition protections, meaning those with medical events in their own or their families' pasts can be used to raise their premiums (once again, higher premiums for them), if they can get coverage at all.

Rural counties in particular get hammered, as Trump himself has acknowledged:

Its a start. I like the opt out part. Not a fan of requiring states who opt out to create high risk pools. Opt out should mean opt out. States can come up with whatever system they want.

And it's still better than anything the GOP has come up with.

Nothing the GOP has come up with has been pass into law and tried yet. One after another insurance companies are bailing out of Obamacare.
