Anyone that has had any customer service experience knows that the steward reacted wrong. I agree that the customer isn't always right, but even when the customer is wrong, there's an appropriate way to explain to him that he's wrong.
Go to work at any given service industry job and try to provoke a fight with a customer and see how long it takes to be out of a job.
