Sources: US prepares charges to seek arrest of WikiLeaks' Julian Assange

Meet the new boss, he's the same as the old boss.

Assange and WL are a threat to the status quo, and now that Donald has his constituents believing he has actually drained the swamp, he will consolidate the American fascism and get rid of its enemies. Assange and his exposure of government crimes is a huge threat to the status quo.

This announcement proves that Assange was right all along.

There is one small detail we seem to be glossing over. Assange isn't an American. He isn't a resident and he wasn't in the US when any of these things happened. Assange has no obligation to protect US classified information. If Assange bad mouthed Kim Jong Un he would be breaking North Korean law. So f-ing what? He isn't in North Korea.

This isn't some universal crime like murder where the ethical thing to do is to extradite the person where the crime was commited. The essence of what makes leaking classified information illegal is that it is arguably a traitorous thing to do. But you can't be a traitor to a country that you owe no allegiance to or even live in.

If a Fox News or CNN reporter talked a Chinese soldier into sending them classified Chinese documents would we think it appropriate to extradite the American reporter to China?

Good points, but Assange's only obligation is to publish the truth and thereby expose the crimes of any government. It is quite likely that of all governments in the world, the US government is the biggest law breaker, so that increases the probability that any given release of documents will involve the US government.

How will the USA arrest Assange when he's holed up in the Embassy of Ecuador in London?

I don't see any way that's going to happen.

It won't happen while he is in there. But if he ever leaves...

According to this Justice Department, leaks in general has become a priority and they look to put some people in jail.

According to CNN
"US view of WikiLeaks and Assange began to change after investigators found what they believe was proof that WikiLeaks played an active role in helping Edward Snowden, a former NSA analyst, disclose a massive cache of classified documents." If this is the case the First Amendment will not preclude the prosecution of Assange.

It's ok if it's Democrat information though? Assange was a good guy passing on the Russian hacker's stolen data.

Was the Democrat information classified? Nope.

What Hillary had on her home-brew mail server, on the other hand....

Interesting Wikileaks helped Trump's campaign tremendously. Now he is throwing them under the bus. Me thinks he's trying to distance himself.

Benefiting from the information in private emails doesn't mean you are bound to support releasing classified information.

I beg to differ. It matters not if stolen or classified so long as the publisher of said information did not steal or cause to steal said information said publisher is protected and well they should be, especially so, if said information reveals wrongdoing on the part of the government.

You're begging up a rope. Disseminating classified information is never legal.

A clear violation of the first amendment regarding freedom of the press. Also freedom of speech if you have not been read and signed in on said classified material and come by it by chance. The press and anybody else not read and signed into such materials have no obligations to not reveal said materials to whoever they choose however they choose.

There are no absolutes when it comes to Constituional rights. The government could take punitive action against a journalist on the grounds that it impacts national security, but the bar for this is high and the government hast to evidence a true risk rather than mere national embarrassment.

New York Times Co. v. United States. The Supreme Court allowed the NYT and Washington Post to publish the classified Pentagon Papers.

Really? It took the U.S. 5+ years to come up with this startling new piece of information that incriminates Assange directly? What, did they just pull it out of their ass?

I don't think the U.S. government has any business targeting Wikileaks while there is an ongoing investigation about Russian interference in the election.

God, people are way too trusting. Do you think your current government is above lying?? They will twist the story any way they can to make the law fit it, in order to silence Wikileaks.
