WASHINGTON — President Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday aimed at making it harder for technology companies to recruit low-wage workers from foreign countries and undercut Americans looking for jobs. Mr. Trump will also direct all federal agencies to systematically examine the effectiveness of government rules and trade agreements that require a preference for purchasing from American companies. The president will announce the order during a visit to the headquarters of Snap-on Tools in Kenosha, Wis., senior administration officials told reporters during a briefing Monday afternoon. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the president’s announcement.

As an IT professional, I am 100% behind Trump on this. Companies have been abusing the H1B system for years.

As an IT Professional for more than 30 years, I have never once had my Job taken from me by an H1B Applicant.

If you got Game, you have no problems in The Technology Space.

With that said, it is abused
You'e lucky you stuck with hardware, then.

Things aren't quite so rosy in s/w development.

I haven't lost a job to someone on an H1B either, but as you agree, it's abused, and thus people are losing their jobs to H1Bs.

I applaud this.

But better yet: Why not legislate it, so the next Pres don't revoke the EOs?

You would have to get it past hundreds of cheap labor conservatives in congress to do that.

My business is Software/Firmware Company, and Hardware.

... and I've always hire the most qualified ... period.

I've never once couldn't find a US Citizen to fill a position.

That's you, then.

That's not the tact taken by much of corporate America, particularly in product development. I've been there.

^^

And I would add to my above, the reason you may have found so many competent American s/w engs, is because many large corps were bringing in H1Bs and laying-off their American employees.

Manufacturing is more difficult because it can be done at a lower cost in China, Mexico or other places ... it's just a Fact.

Agreed.

But those are the jobs often being targeted

And I think we also need to differentiate between positions require the SEs to interact with high cultural awareness and English Language skills outside the organization, and those that don't.

Back in the day I saw one of my Fortune 50 corp's s/w dev labs flip from mostly Americans at 85K/yr, to new Indian H1B's at 27K/yr. In 2-3 years the transformation was complete when an Indian became the dept head.

BTW - The 85K Americans had to train the new H1Bs as part of receiving the full severance package! Sweet deal, eh?

[the 85K salary indicates this was awhile ago, obviously]

Donald Trump doesn't hire US Citizens to pour concrete

Most try to wiggle out of that by hiring "US" subcontractors who happen to use foreign workers. ;)

good for Trump.. doing something against the grain of being one of the rich, and against the political establishment. Also being in IT I applaud him for this.

Agreed. These companies hire platform SMEs from India at $50k a year when the going rate in the region is double or triple that.

It is one of the perks of being in the classified world now is that my salary is no longer in competition with H1B hires.

I hear people often talking about the salary bump you get when you get a security clearance. In reality, having worked both sides, it is really just a matter of shedding the low pay H1B competition.

Microstrategy, a company I worked for that was a classic abuser of H1B, had such depressed salaries as a result that some of the VPs didn't even make 6 figure salaries.

It's never EVER been about finding qualified people. It's about saving money.

Let's say you have a 10 million dollar budget for new employees.

How many Americans can you hire for that amount. Take into account the SS costs, Healthcare, Retirement... all that good stuff and their wages?

Now how many people can say an HCL hire for 10 million? Say doing a lot of your SW development and support out of Chennai India?

Here's a hint HCL can promise you a LOT more productivity for the cost. Now QUALITY... or Customer service... diff story.

You'd be smart to hire women, because they only get 70 cents on the dollar.
