The Donald's ego will cost the Brits a 'few' pennies, this autumn

Trump demands gold‑plated welcome

President insists on a carriage journey down The Mall to Buckingham Palace

Donald Trump waving from the Queen’s royal carriage is not a scenario many would have foreseen a year ago, but it has become a very real prospect, forcing security services to plan an unprecedented lockdown.

The White House has made clear it regards the carriage procession down the Mall as an essential element of the itinerary for the visit currently planned for the second week of October, according to officials.

Security sources have warned, however, that the procession will require a “monster” security operation, far greater than for any recent state visit.

Barack Obama chose to spare his hosts the task of securing the journey from Horse Guards Parade to Buckingham Palace when he was welcomed by the Queen in 2011. In a slight change of usual protocol President Obama arrived at the palace in an armoured motorcade.

The Metropolitan Police was already gearing up for the biggest public order operation in several years, with tens of thousands of people expected to descend on the area to protest. Senior police are already grappling with how to achieve a balance between Mr Trump’s security and allowing the public’s right to demonstrate.

One source said that Mr Trump’s decision to opt for the carriage, rather than the bullet and bomb-proof car that was used by his predecessor presented a range of fresh headaches.

I would, too! You only get to be The President of The United States, once.

Then he can personally pay for it out of his own pocket.

...or you can bill him for it and then watch him file for bankruptcy.

I'm sorry? Is Trump now in charge of his welcoming committee in other countries? More baloney, I'm guessing.

I have to wonder if this "source" is the same one they cite in all the other stories
that try to damage Trump? If not the same probably some relative who wants to throw
a bit of mud at Trump.

I'm surprised he just doesn't "invite" Theresa May (or the House of Lords) to Mar-a-Lago.
But the insecure clown wants a gold-plated welcome to match his apartment/nouveau riche taste in everything.

Of course. None of it is true unless it comes straight from the mouth of Spicer.

it's his ass being exposed by his choice
maybe he is counting on the low numbers of guns in the general british population to mitigate his personal risk
he carriage ride will make a statement
probably not the one he expects

He could insist on using the standard motorcade as it is also a security issue.

So how's that independence revolutionary thingy going over there in america. You know, the getting rid of the monarchy and all its trappings, the all men created equal stuff. Still living the dream are we?

All I know is I would pay good money to see him pelted with rotten tomatoes. Perhaps a catapult loaded some discrete distance away with a few bushels of them?

You've got a point. But it didn't start with Trump if that's what you mean. We seem to have lost the meaning of the three branches of government keeping each other in check a long time ago. We give way to much power and attention to the executive branch. I'm sure our forefathers are rolling in their graves.

I don't know that Trump has "insisted" on anything. This article is written in a somewhat vague manner, it's likely he requested the carriage and the media is using wording to make it look like he's demanding it.

We know the carriage is used for state visits of other world leaders. I gotta say I would think riding the carriage would be pretty cool. I think the Times is blowing this all out of proportion though

But other world leaders do not have nor need the security the US president does.

I would contest that, because I worked in Seattle during a State Visit by President Xi Jinping of China and the security was very tight, and I've also worked in Seattle during presidential visits, near identical. I don't know that hosting presidents like Vladimir Putin or Xi Jingping (both of whom did the carriage) who lead major world powers is that different then President of the US.

There are other world leaders too who likely have greater security risks like PM of Israel or King of Saudi Arabia or leaders like President of Mexico who have strong criminal elements in their countries who want them dead. I don't know if those leaders have ever ridden in the carriage, but I think if Presidents of Russia or China have done those then USA is not that much more involved, certainly not in our second closest ally

Guess who took the Gold coach ride? It is offered to a head of state if they would like to use it.
I don't think this story is correct with the"demands" line. It's offered as a normal function.

Chinese president Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan rode in the the Diamond Jubilee State Coach (Gold coach) as they made the journey along crowd-lined Mall towards the palace.

And so did Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. When a head of state is in country for a state banquet the coach is normal procedure.

I'm having trouble following your position here. First it was untrue, now it is, but it's normal.

Maybe some common sense is called for. Or at least some consistency.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess he's not going to give the Queen an Ipod of his speeches when he returns the Churchill bust.

From your lips to Gawd's ear- let's ALL pray he is a one term President... ;)

So you never had an issue with the money spent by Obama and his travels? How about Congress critters- so few Americans will ever get to be a sitting congress critter- money no object there as well???

For that matter almost any publicly elected official can make the same claim they are elite compared to the people they 'serve'- their office deserves some pomp and circumstances too... :peace

Wait, haven't you heard? The arrests are coming next week. :lamo

Get ready for President Pence. ;)
