The Alabama Senate has voted to allow a church to form its own police force.

Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 24-4 to allow Briarwood Presbyterian church in Birmingham to establish a law enforcement department.

The church says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe.

Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.

The state has given a few private universities the authority to have a police force, but never a church or non-school entity.

Police experts have said such a police department would be unprecedented in the US.

A similar bill is also scheduled to be debated in the House on Tuesday.

Look, what's going on in this OP is awful, but do not claim the entire South is like that. You guys have problems in LA that we don't have in the South, and we have problems that you don't have. Clean up your own back yard before you take a **** in mine.
 
Letting any organization have a police force that is responsible to no one, what could go go wrong. What is wrong with hiring security guards?

How do you know that it's responsible to no one?? There's nothing in the article that states that. Do you have a source for this claim that you'd like to share??

I haven't shat in your backyard. I simply stated I couldn't live there, and that this is emblematic of some of the reasons why.

Religious police are just that. A religious institution (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Sihk, Hindu, etc.) that gets the power and authority from the state to form a police force solely for that religious group is a problem. The OP made the statement about Sharia Law as a comparison to what's happening in the OP article, and the outrage by many that they are terrified of one form of religious group law, when this has all the potential to be just as damaging and secretive.

You did in fact, as you did above, take a metaphorical crap in my back yard. I don't make it a habit of degrading your home town with bigoted claims about the people that live there, although it would be very simple to do so. Please do not do so to mine. Posts containing arrogant bigotry of other people and other cultures are not welcome, from anyone, toward anyone.

But, of course, I actually didn't. Stating that that was a reason I couldn't live there isn't an insult to you or the South, no matter how badly you want it to be one.

back to the topic: how is this request for a police force any different than methodist college having its own campus police unit
 
Think they'd allow the Mosque in Birmingham to form their own to protect them from the threats they've received?
 
The South is a broad region. TX, AR, KY, TN, VA, SC, GA

Generalizing an entire region as backwards can piss some people off.

However, if you want to criticize AL, for producing some of the most disgusting politicians and policies, I hear you.
