Congressman tells angry constituents the idea that they pay his salary is ?bullcrap? | Miami Herald

An Oklahoman congressman is under fire after he seemingly dismissed the notion that his constituents pay for him to go to Congress, calling the idea “bullcrap” in a viral video making the rounds on social media.Markwayne Mullin, speaking at a town hall Tuesday in Jay, Oklahoma, was responding to a question from the audience when he responded to a claim that constituents pay for him to work in Congress.
“You say you pay for me to do this. Bullcrap. I pay for myself. I paid enough taxes before I got there and continue to through my company to pay my own salary. This is a service. No one here pays me to go,” said the 39-year-old Republican who represents Oklahoma’s second district, which covers much of the eastern part of the state.
When several audience members pushed back against this claim, Mullin went on, “I’m just saying this is a service for me, not a career, and I thank God this is not how I make my living.”

We've done it America. We've gone full circle. We've gone from the supporters of politicians saying that they were on welfare, and nobody gave them anything. To citizens being elected, and believing that it is their taxes alone that pay for their salaries. We can't possibly go further than this. We reached the age of absurdity. Let's all take a deep breath, turn around and just go home. Alright? We've had a rough couple of decades. Let's just sit a few weeks out, take a vacation as a country and get back to this when we've all been to the beach, caught up on Orange is the New Black, had some sushi.

You know, fun stuff.

I love how he said he "paid" his salary through his own taxes. Of course his taxes didn't pay for roads, civil service of other elected members, and of course government expenditures as well he just paid for "his own salary". What a douche, he is what is wrong with politicians.

The only reason I could reasonably support citizenship tests for all would be because some people just wouldn't study for it - those people aren't really worthy of being citizens by birth alone. This guy is one of those people. I don't know who he thinks paid for his campaign.

Considering he only sits in Congress for about 110 days he owes his constituents a refund in their taxes.

71--23--6 in 2016 are the only numbers that matter, besides the fact that Mullin spent $1.6 million on his election compared to zero reported by the FEC for the DEM or 3rd party candidates. We'll see if OK-2 becomes another KS-4 .

It sounds like he "bought" his way to congress. One has to be uber rich now to run for office.

His comments really shock and disgust me. This is ignorant for so many reasons.

Well if that's his attitude, then he should just GTFO. Because apparently, he's providing a piss poor service.

The Congressman in this thread is a selfish moron, but this idea that they only work when Congress is in session is an unfair myth that seriously needs to be debunked. They work, and they work a lot. They work long hours. Their time back in their states/districts are work times, too, and often include nights and weekends.

This Congressman is a selfish moron. We ALL, collectively, pay his salary.

Though, not to defend him, I don't have patience for the individual who stands up at a meeting and sanctimoniously says, "I pay your salary!", as if they are the only one. There's a disconnect from reality in that extreme, also.
