Russia Vetoes United Nations Probe of the Syria Gas Attack

No, he legitimately has a very high approval rating. People in the West think he's a dick, but people in Russia love the way he's been thumbing his nose at the West and gaining Russia prestige on the world stage again.

Like I said, approval rating is purely political and has no basis on the reality of the individual. And Russia is comparatively tiny to the entire Western World (well over 50 countries and >800 million people), so - yeah - pretty much everyone hates Putin. And the people who know the least about him (Russians) love him. Funny how politicians lie like that, eh?

Blaming the entirety of the UN for the actions of one of their departments is highly irresponsible and short-sighted. If you want to solve the problem of the UN Peacekeepers, the place to start looking is who keeps chairing the DPKO:

Obviously, the problem here isn't the UN as a whole. A new country that isn't at Nigeria's level of corruption needs to take over the Department of Peace Keeping Operations. As for your claim that the UN isn't doing anything, that is also false:

A vote is irrelevant. The UN voted to make WonderWoman an honorary member. When was the last time they actually DID something worth a damn?

Do you vote?

Yeah, I vote, and then I put my vote into action by donating money and whenever possible, time to things that are important to me. Lord knows the UN is far more capable than DOING something than a single individual.

And they do. Part of the reason the world didn't blow up in nuclear war between the U.S. and USSR is due in large part to the United Nations.

Well, I look forward to putting some troops on the ground in Syria...except they won't because they know that having Assad in charge is the best thing going forward.

I look forward to the UN putting some boots on the ground in Nigeria to fight Boko Haram...You know, the group who have killed way more than ISIS?

Or let's go back to Haiti...UN had to pull out after doing nothing there except rape children. Good job.

It's very likely that the UN refuses to send people out because all their members are sociopaths and rapists who can't control themselves.

Can someone explain to me why we allow the US and Russia to dominate everything at the UN? If the world wants something and one big country doesn't, we just can't do anything?

Official: Russia knew Syrian chemical attack was coming

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has made a preliminary conclusion that Russia knew in advance of Syria's chemical weapons attack last week, but has no proof of Moscow's involvement, a senior U.S. official said Monday. The official said that a drone operated by Russians was flying over a hospital as victims of the attack were rushing to get treatment. Hours after the drone left, a Russian-made fighter jet bombed the hospital in what American officials believe was an attempt to cover up the usage of chemical weapons. The U.S. official said the presence of the surveillance drone over the hospital couldn't have been a coincidence, and that Russia must have known the chemical weapons attack was coming and that victims were seeking treatment. Until Monday, U.S. officials had said they weren't sure whether Russia or Syria operated the drone. The official said the U.S. is now convinced Russia controlled the drone. The official said it still isn't clear who was flying the jet that bombed the hospital, because the Syrians also fly Russian-made aircraft. U.S. officials previously have said Russians routinely work with Syrians at the Shayrat air base where the attack is supposed to have originated. U.S. officials say the chemical weapons were stored there and that those elements add to the conclusion that Russia was involved.

Since the Syrians and Russians both use the same airspace, the Syrian air force must lodge/clear all flights with Russian military air-controllers for purposes of deconfliction. This is probably why the Russians don't want international investigators to obtain Syrian flight records for the day of the gas attack. Moscow regularly vetoes UN resolutions on Syria to insulate itself from war crimes charges...

8 times Russia blocked a UN Security Council resolution on Syria

Now go back and read the bold, and put emphasis on the underlined. In what way does that not sound like blatant propaganda?

Do you have anything to say about the UN habitually raping children and then covering it up? What about UN refusing to take action on almost every crisis on the planet?

You are of the opinion that not only does the UN not do any good, all they do is harm, so it should be done away with. You are incorrect. There is an absolute need for a functional UN, not the UN as it currently exists, but a new and improved UN. And if such an entity is to exist, only the US can lead that effort. We should put our "foot" down and insist on the start the process of institutional changes.
