Pence casts tiebreaking Senate procedural vote on funding for abortion providers | TheHill

Vice President Pence on Thursday cast a tie-breaking procedural vote that allowed the Senate to move forward with an effort to nix an Obama-era rule that blocked states from defunding healthcare providers for political reasons.

Pence appeared on the floor after a procedural vote stalled in a 50-50 tie, casting the 51st vote in favor.

Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) joined all Democrats in voting against ending debate on the bill.

Title X is a federal grant program dedicated to providing family planning & related health services to low-income & uninsured Americans. It does not cover abortions.

What Exactly Is Title X Funding? | The Huffington Post

The Title X family planning program was enacted by President Nixon in 1970 to fund a range of preventive health care services free of charge to patients at or below the poverty level. For low- to moderate-income patients, there is a sliding fee scale for access to Title X services, which include breast and pelvic exams, Pap smears and other cancer screenings, HIV testing, pregnancy testing and counseling, and affordable birth control.

The GOP have voted to overturn an Obama rule that prevents states from withholding Title X grants from PP & other care providers who also provide abortions. Federal funds can't be used for abortions per existing federal law - grant dollars go to preventive care and screenings etc. It prevents PP from receiving state reimbursements for qualifying activities (this is how the GOP "defunds" PP, btw - by refusing reimbursements to them - there's no actual budget line item, federal or state, for PP).

So well done GOP. 2 of your female members voted against this (your 2 longest serving females), leaving you without enough votes to pass it, but Pence gleefully swoops in to sign away many low income people's access to preventative healthcare. This will probably increase the number of abortions, hurt the poor (both medically and economically) and just seems to be a way to spite PP for providing abortions.

Maybe if the GOP actually talked to women they would realize how it might help them to understand the harm their causing. Of course, Pence has never needed a pap smear himself so he's all too happy to cut access to them.

Reminder: Here is a photo from a Pence tweet showing him discussing female healthcare.

If you aren't at the negotiating table, you're on the menu.

Come now, Cardinal. They have all the knowledge and expertise they could ever need...They have sisters, daughters and wives after all. /sarcasm

"elections have consequences"

Right, and when those consequences include the denial of preventative healthcare services to low income people that was passed in a bipartisan fashion, services that save us money in the long run, you know that something is seriously ****ed up.

Yeah I'm sure they all love women!

Oh yeah you're right. I already knew that I'm liberal, so I should just sit down and not say anything when the GOP go ahead and screw people over. Sorry. I'll just go sit quietly for four years now. That's how democracies work right?

Anything to say about the actual topic at hand?

Big thanks to Pence.

Shame on the pro-abort RINO trash... (and the Democraps but that went without saying).

well you can not like it thats your choice, but until the 2018 elections you are going to have to deal with the decisions which are being made

That's stating the blatantly obvious. You think we all don't know that by now?

If the said organizations would spin off the parts that supply contraception and abortion separating ownership, management and personelle? Hey, the problem would be gone. But they are too bigoted and arrogant to even realize that the present structure rides rough over other citizens' Constitutional rights. This has certainly been one of the reasons Trump is now President.

That may be, but I am curious why are you here, since you have added absolutely nothing to the topic?

added to this topic? is really nothing more then bitching, surly you and others knew this kind of thing was coming and i am sure more is too, which you don't know about.

the republicans on the other side bitched when they had no control.

You should never comment on anything the government does because you can't personally change it.

Wow, aren't old white dudes just swell at cutting women's access to healthcare!

The false narrative that PP is the only and best choice for people is astounding:
The money that currently goes to Planned Parenthood should be redirected to Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers (FHQCs), of which outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities 20-to-1. These centers are all over the country, in rural and urban areas, and serve all people.

No one is advocating that women’s health care be taken away by defunding Planned Parenthood. There are thousands of other healthcare facilities that provide the same services, sans abortion, that Planned Parenthood does.

Sorry, Planned Parenthood, but we just don’t need you. And from the looks of how Planned Parenthood was flush with cash to spend on the 2016 elections, it looks like they don’t need our taxpayer dollars anyway.

They spent over $30 million in during the 2016 cycle to elect their favored candidate, which didn’t turn out so well. But no matter, because celebrities have come to their rescue, donating hefty chunks of change and lending their star power to the cause.

i am saying this people better be prepared for what they are not going to like, this is what happens when the nations divided because ------------->government is involved in our personal lives

Liberals acting like Pence just outlawed abortion. Lol

He just ensured that I don't have to pay for your indiscretion and bad judgment. That's all.

Well done, Mr. Pence.

If they don't act in a way consistent with the Constitution, it isn't the GOP's fault that those girls cannot get the services you mention. It is the bigoted arrogance of the organizations that want to circumvent the Constitution.

yes you can, however i don't see them turning against the people who actually voted for them and supporting people who voted for the other guy
