Interesting. While Trump's job approval rating seems to be in a slow free fall (41% on rcp as of this post), he enjoys ~85% approval from Republicans. What is the makeup of the HFC members' districts, and can a spat with Trump hurt them in time for 2018?

And if Trump somehow did manage to weaken the HFC members' election efforts, would they be primaried or could they be made vulnerable to outright general elections?

President Trump effectively declared war Thursday on the House Freedom Caucus, the powerful group of hard-line conservative Republicans who blocked the health-care bill, vowing to “fight them” in the 2018 midterm elections.

In a morning tweet, Trump warned that the Freedom Caucus would “hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast.” He grouped its members, all of them Republican, with Democrats in calling for their political defeat — an extraordinary incitement of intraparty combat from a sitting president.

I am sure a Republican civil war will go well for the GOP.

We should run a pool on when the Don and Congress will fall out, the man is already taking aim at Ryan.

And what caused this giant ****-a-tron was one complicated and contentious policy making. One. I've been given to understand that the complications of writing a new healthcare bill when compared to tax reform is analogous to the hassles of buying a new car when compared to being a first time home buyer.

Trump is mistaken about this

Ryan and the moderate repubs will stab trump in the back whenever it suits them whereas the Freedom Caucus reprents his most loyal base.

Instead of browbeating the conservatives he should work with them to make a better bill that they can support

Trump probably retains high popularity in the Freedom Caucus' districts. So, the question now is, do the people double down on the Freedom Caucus or Donald Trump?

Also loved Ryan's remark that Trump may start working with the Dems if the Reps do not get their act together.
How bad can it be working with the representatives of the people?

That is a misunderstanding of epic proportions. While both Trump and the Freedom Caucus were sent to Washington on a tide of antiestablishment sentiments, there the similarity ends. While the HFC are ideologues, Trump has no ideology of any kind except for the abstract concept of "winning." So if Trump's sole aim is to win, and if the HFC is to pass legislation that hews to a specific ideology, then expecting the two to team up with any degree of regularity is naive.

That is indeed the question. The problem is I really don't know the HFC's constituents. I haven't seen any polls or interviews and have no idea where their priorities lie.

Division within the GOP isn't what I would be aiming for right now, if I were him.

I think they can agree on other subjects

But if winning is the goal why not win on healthcare with the Freedom Caucus instead of without them?

Of course they have nothing whatsoever in common with democrats so grouping them together is nonsense not to be taken seriously

Yeah, that's specifically what he tried doing when he agreed to gut the republican healthcare bill of the ten essential health benefits, thereby starving him of the needed "moderate" republican votes.

these people aren't too bright, so i doubt they'll even notice the conflict

Donald is a divide and conquer guy, not the best way forward in politics.

I simply can't believe these people don't have an opinion on where they fit between Trump's promise of a healthcare policy that gave them everything they'd want vs. their own Representatives who promised to starve them of any healthcare at all. I don't care if they have the collective IQ of a box of tic-tacs, they've got to have something to say about that.

But if it does divide the Republican base, the 2018 midterms may provide an interesting outcome.

The problem is that conservatives do not believe the word of establishment republicans to address their complaints in phase 2 and three

We remember the 1986 amnesty bill that fed the carrot to illegals on day one but never fullfilled the promises made the conservatives to end illegal migration forever

You're not paying attention. HFC and Trump demonstrated much larger and much more obvious divisions within the anti-establishment itself, as I've already explained.
