This is disturbing. In addition to refusing to share the intelligence he gained from the White House with the rest of the intelligence committee, Nunes is also blocking potentially important information from going to testimony. Nunes has moved to using his position as chairman of the intelligence committee, which has been set up to oversee the executive branch and to run the criminal investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, to act as shield and defense for Trump instead.

When Flynn stepped down after he had lied to Pence about his conversations with the Russian ambassador and Sessions recused himself when he lied about his conversations with the ambassador, it seemed there was still a sense of shame that existed in Washington. But with Nunes openly mocking Democrats' call for him to step down, and enjoying the full support of Paul Ryan, that sense of shame has almost entirely evaporated. Petkanas' use of the word "coverup" is the most understated one she could have opted for.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) canceled a hearing on Russia where former acting Attorney General Sally Yates was to testify the same day the White House objected to him about her planned testimony.

According to the series of letters, a Justice Department official told Yates' lawyer, David O'Neill, that she would need “consent” from the White House in order to discuss her conversations with the White House.

In a statement responding to the story, Democratic National Committee aide Zac Petkanas tied the White House's push to block Yates' testimony to the cancelled hearing, arguing that Nunes is working with the White House to hide information. “Now we know why Chairman Nunes canceled the hearing today. This isn’t an investigation into Donald Trump’s ties to Russia -- it’s a cover up," he said.

What the hell is Nunes' problem, man? The only thing that shady stuff like this is gonna do, is just make them look even more suspicious.

It's time for a truly independent, non partisan committee to objectively investigate the possible Russian interference. Nunes is clearly more interested in protecting the party than in finding the truth.

With the notable exceptions of Senators McCain, Graham and Collins, the Republicans as a group have drawn a line in the sand and on one side of that line is the Republican president and everyone else not there with him is perceived to be the enemy on the other side of the line. They have made a decision to not to anything which could hurt their president or his administration and are doing all they can to protect him and their own political interests and that of their party.

This is the opposite of what checks and balances are suppose to be as exercised in the Watergate investigation years ago. Then many honorable and decent Republicans were more than willing to hold a complete investigation regardless of where it led and in the end it did in their own Republican president.

Ryan backs Nunes and Nunes backs Trump. And that is sad.

It's all about the optics. I think his lack of experience is behind a lot of this. Nunes needs to have a meeting with Ryan and the other GOP members of that committee before this blows up in their faces. I am not enjoying this spectacle. The GOP is in enough trouble given who sits in the Oval Office. The last thing they want to do if they plan to keep their majorities is to commit these stupid unforced errors.

There is absolutely no other viable solution at this point. Other than drop the investigation altogether.

How it "makes them look" is yesterday. If there's a difference between a detective getting his information from a suspect, using it to keep an important witness off the stand and keeping the rest of the police department in the dark about his information, I'm not seeing it.

The WH and it's allies in Congress like Nunes are reminding me more and more of the early days of Watergate.

Cover-ups. Denials.. Lies.. Obstruction.

The Bunker Mentality will be next. If it not's already creeping in with Trump.

A classic tip-off: they're lying about things they didn't/don't need to lie about.

Time for a Bi Partisan committee, only problem is it would need to be signed off by the President
Nunez just keeps on stepping on his privates, and now it appears the WH does not want certain information made available by the former Acting AG, due to Presidential communication privilege.

Yates and another witness at the planned hearing, former CIA director John Brennan, had made clear to government officials by Thursday that their testimony to the committee probably would contradict some statements that White House officials had made, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The following day, when Yates’s lawyer sent a letter to the White House indicating that she still wanted to testify, the hearing was canceled.

Yeah, they need to put a lid on this kind of crap quickly. This doesn't not make them look good at all. If they want to address and refute all of these Russia allegations, then they need to do that as transparently as possible, not with shady stuff like this.

The primary difference between Watergate and now is that Trump has all of Congress working interference for him.

As I've already said, Trump could steal a miniature submarine, cross the Atlantic, announce in a massive public spectacle that he was defecting to Russia, and Paul Ryan would not only not bring articles of impeachment but would allow him to continue running the country from inside Russia.

What we're seeing with Nunes and his support from Ryan is the single greatest breakdown in ethics, tradition of bipartisanship and checks and balances we've seen in modern history.

Just remember: a special prosecutor was once assigned to investigate fishy looking real estate investments.

Full interview from Nunes last night.

He was asked about lots of stuff.

Decide for yourself.

Seems to me this should be easily resolved. Every rat and rat leaning media outlet is claiming coverup. The WH is saying they have done nothing to stop her from testifying.

"The White House has taken no action to prevent Sally Yates from testifying and the Department of Justice specifically told her that it would not stop her and to suggest otherwise is completely irresponsible."

So...All Sally Yates or her attorney should need to do is produce the letter in which they claim the WH is blocking them from testifying and Spicer's comments should be proven to be lies.

Well here's this little gem from CBS's Twitter:

JUST IN: A 3/24 letter from DOJ to Sally Yates states she must get authorization from WH to testify about convos w/ WH, CBS News can confirm

Link.

The same Sally Yates that refused to defend/enforce an Executive order from Trump by announcing it publicly instead of resigning as every other Justice Department figure has done per protocol?

THAT Sally Yates is a partisan first, does her job second. Her view of things should be viewed with suspicion as she has an axe to grind both before and after she was fired.

Perfect. The DoJ says she can testify. Now all we need is the letter from the WH that says she cant and Spicers comments are shown to be lies. Should be a piece of cake.

I, for one, am all for a truly independent investigation that goes wherever it need go to find wrongdoing on any collusion. And the leaks, because this is the one area where we do have evidence a felony was committed... and whatever else might turn up. I don't care which side, I don't want the corrupt, criminal or the criminally corrupt in positions of power over we, the people.

And if people are found to be guilty of a crime, whomever so shall they be, should go to jail/prison for at least the minimum time. NO plea deals. Do the crime and do the time...or end up dying trying.

This is where jurisdiction gets a little wonky for me. What would be helpful is if we had a thorough roadmap of who has oversight over whom.
