After Barring Girls for Leggings, United Airlines Defends Decision

I heard about this on the news last night and the part about them flying as an employee perk got second mention after the headline that United would not let them on the plane because they were wearing leggings. This was a good example of how manipulative the media can be in how it presents things.

Most of this as I understand it was started by another passenger who was questioning the policy on twitter.

My brother works for Delta, and I've flown on his passes. There is a dress code, which I have no issue with. If you're flying on the company dime, look presentable.

100%.... i work for the airlines and when traveling on the company dine we are not allowed to wear shorts, and must present a neat clean appearance or we are denied.

You have to hover a bit...I once didn't get on an empty flight because the gate agent didn't clear non revs, this was after 12 hours of flying and 2 more flights to get home. Not my airline though.

yeah be seen but dont be obnoxious

I think what happened is another passenger saw them being denied access and, understandably, question that but I don't think she knew the entire story. That being said, I do question making a 10 or 11 year old girl change. Reminds me of a story about a fast food chain denying service to somebody because they were with a baby that was barefoot.

I haven't non revved in a long time, I need to get my GF on my benefits. I looked at going out this weekend, but too soon and too $$ once I'm there.

Basically, screw all you who get to fly free. From now on I'm lobbying every airline to require all you free flyers to travel in tuxs and ball gowns.

Even better, my company pays me to fly! But I have to sit in the front and the uniform policy is very strict. So, your lobbying will do no good.

Actually, if you could start lobbying for removing ties from then uniforms, that would be super. You want pilots comfortable, right? It's for the safety of the flight! I bring it up and nobody listens.

I earned it. Crappy wages, frequent layoffs that I survived, 9/11. Yes, I can fly free, but....it is standby, and I've spent many a night trying to get a 5 hour catnap at an airport after being stranded. Still, its is cool, I used to do crazy trips....

The material used in leggings has a nasty habit of melting when exposed to flames. Not a good idea in an airplane.
Being exposed to flames is actually a bad idea anywhere.

Took my wife and her mother on a visit to their family once. Planes were all overbooked on the way home, full paying passengers werent getting on. Mother in law starts talking to others waiting and telling them how we are flying for free. Told my wife to tell her to stop. She didnt fianlly had to swear at her (quitely so no one else could hear). She finally shut up, more from shock of me swearing at her than actual understanding of why. Finally they call up a couple on passes who are dressed like tramps. Tell my wife and her mother in law to get ready. Mother in law starts getting vocal again asking why. Quitely tell her those people are not getting on because of the way they are dressed, she doesnt beleive me. Sure enough they are denied and instead of admitting their mistake gracefully they start to argue. Only ends when the boarding agents tell them they might lose their priveledges or even job if this continues (airline doesnt mess around with this), They leave and sure enough we get called. Go up and they say 2 spots left. I say to my wife take your mom and go. Mother in law starts to argue saying she should stay cause we both work the next day (I only start late afternoon) Bording agent says get on now or dont go. Mother in law still argues. Finally turn to my wife and say. Get you F**** Mother on that F***** plane now or I will kill her (again quitely so only we can hear but with extreme conviction.)
She finally gets on, I get on a flight the next morning.
I will NEVER fly with my mother in law ever again

Amen!

We can do shorts, if they are nice. Sometimes I'll wear nice jeans, and change an hour or so before landing. I always wore a suit and tie for foreign airlines, they would frequently upgrade you if you did.

So many great non rev horror stories. We once flew 747's to HNL, but when I flew, we only had one left (we got rid of them, they bankrupted us). So, after a weekend, I get to the airport at 6 pm 4 hours early, check in. We take off, and after 30 min, we had to come back, the gear doors wouldn't close. Spent hours on the plane, then off the plane then on, and we had to cancel due to crew rest. I knew a lot of other ee's on the flight, so I went to action, hitting up other airlines to try to get folks home. Finally, Phillipine Airlines would sell us a flight to SFO for $100, employees only because it was an inter US flight, and they couldn't pick up regular passengers. We get out about 11 am that morning, and good that we did, the plane did the same thing next night, ended up being stranded for 4 days. That is 8 full planeloads of cancellations. Non revving sucks when you have a cancellation or a mechanical.

Certainly. More likely in a airliner crash that in most other situations.

I just finished reading a book on UA 232 - the one that crashed in Sioux City back in the late 80s. One of the things that struck me was how many of the survivors who wore synthetic fabrics had their clothes melted to their bodies. It wasn't nearly as much of an issue for folks wearing jeans for example.

This thread needs more examples of HOT babes in Yoga pants, not the ugly fat chicks.. ;)
