Hawaii judge who blocked Trump travel ban now receiving threats, FBI says

Should Obama pick up the tab on security for people who criticized him?

Obama never crossed the line to threaten a judge and undermine the court system.

Should Obama pick up the tab on security for people who criticized him?

Kind of a false equivalency. You'd have to come up with a situation where a decision that Obama made was blocked by someone and then that someone received tax-payer funded security detail. I don't doubt it may have happened. I just can't think of anything offhand that fits that description.

It'd be a legendary thing to do. How good would Trump look? Trump would look like a true benevolent friend of the American people by compensating the tax payer expense incurred as a result of his policies.

given your posting history, I find this claim of yours a bit disingenuous

These must be those strict Constitutionalists...the ones who believe in the government system set up by the Constitution. Including that the Courts act as a checks and balances on the power of the other two branches.

Please cite the specific words in the Constitution which you think set up "the Courts" to "act as a checks and balances on the power of the other two branches." My copy of the Constitution only creates one court--the Supreme Court of the U.S. And no sooner has it done that, than it grants Congress power to make "exceptions" to the Court's appellate jurisdiction. As for the lower federal courts, they would not even exist, had Congress not seen fit to exercise its constitutional power to make laws establishing them.

Unbelievable! I hope the FBI catches those who are making the death threats, and I hope that, whoever they are, they never see the light of day again.
Sadly, death threats have become downright common in contemporary discourse.

It happens to people across the spectrum, and I don't think this is particularly new, either. Pre-social media, people who took controversial stands were threatened as well. It's just easier, and word spreads wider.

This must be'fake news'. I've read and heard over and over only people on the left side of the political spectrum are violent and make threats. (sarcasm off)

I'm pretty sure these threats are coming from leftists.

Hmmm, an Ukrainian UCLA professor who thinks we should allow people to incite others into the crazier aspects of their ideology.

No thanks.

That's not quite it. What he thinks is unimportant. What the Constitution says about freedom of speech is important. And you have not cited any laws that outlaw so called hate speech. People try to chip away at freedom of speech but it is still here.

If history is anything to go by, she's receiving threats from liberals and I hope they get caught.

LOL. There is a story about how some KKK members in East Texas chained a black man and threw him in a river to drown. When caught, one of them denied it and said it was the black man's fault for stealing more chains than he could carry. Both of the assholes got the death penalty.

Your post reminds me of exactly what that asshole said.

The judge isn't a she...and why would liberals threaten a judge for halting Trump's travel ban? That makes no sense.

... What... does that even mean? What would make it bona fide? Do you need to have your plan laid out with pictures, travel maps, etc? I think just saying it makes it bona fide in a country where you can get a gun... everywhere.

what you referred to as hate speech is typically just that - hateful speech directed at minorities. Trump certainly does a lot of that, such as incorrectly calling this judge 'mexican'

these trumpites are all scum but no, if they aren't actively plotting something then there's nothing behind it, just empty threats. Having said that, i have always been outspoken against people with rage issues being able to buy guns. Probably 1/3 of the country should be on the no sell list. That is what should be taken away for public safety, not the liberty of speech

i have no doubt that Trump is trying to intimidate the media and judges into capitulating. He clearly doesn't think free speech should exist for his enemies, and i have no doubt he's inspired these death threats. But let's not employ the same tactics against simpletons who have no ability to carry out their threats

Why should he?

because it's his fault. He needs to know there are consequences to inspiring dangerous behavior. Thanks to him hate crimes have shot up since the election. It's like letting david duke off the hook after a black person is lynched. Maybe duke didn't directly take part in the lynching, but he sure as hell inspired it and wanted it

You didn't even read the article. Not she, he. U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson. I don't even need my crayons for you reinoe, go to the article, there's a picture of him right there.

Perhaps next time read the article instead of falling over yourself to type Liberals derp, derp, derpity derp. Your post is just silly nonsense.

Hawaii judge who blocked Trump travel ban now receiving threats, FBI says - CBS News

Judge gets death threats after blocking Trump travel ban: report

So much hate now adays. Sad. :(

Free speech doesn't cover hate speech

Umm..yes it does. In fact that is the sole purpose of having free speech to begin with. To protect speech that is not popular. And believe it or not you can even threaten to kill someone and it could be protected. The type of threats like that which are not protected are "true threats". IE: Threats that people actually intend to carry out. This was discussed in Watts v. United States in which SCOTUS over ruled a lower courts conviction. It was again discussed in NAACP v. Claiborne Hardware Co.

So, even if the FBI were to apprehend all of the individuals that are threatening this judge its quite possible that all of them could be let go without any charges placed on them.

Apparently, some people interpreted his comments as open season on the judge(s). Now why do suppose they would do that?

Because they are idiots? Called personal responsibility.

It's ridiculous to blame others actions on one person. It's even more ridiculous if you think Trump wants people to kill a judge.

That's a big problem in this country, with people blaming everything but themselves for their actions. It's always someone else's fault.

I don't know if throwing somebody away is the best situation in this case. Free speech doesn't cover hate speech, and it's a politically charged climate. Emotions are running high, throw them in jail a few years, give them counseling, give them the opportunity to calm the **** down.

No need to destroy somebody's life over threats they couldn't have possibly thought they wouldn't be prosecuted for. Classic signs of mental illness and political activity making a bad combination.

It sure the hell does.

The same reason the Jewish kid called in all those bomb threats to Jewish Synagogues. Or the black guy that burned down the black church. There have been numerous examples of people on the left doing things like this in hopes of tarring Trump or the right with it. Either way, anyone calling in death threats is a kook. Id say its even money as to which side of the isle he sits on.

Reactionaries hate when they're stopped from marginalizing people different from them, so it's not surprising.

Yes it does.

Death threats, on the other hand, are not covered.

I disagree. Hate Speech is not always Free Speech. The Hate Speech in and of itself can be considered a death threat. If a white man stands in the middle of Times Square, and starts yelling - "I hate Muslims", "I hate Blacks", "I hate Latinos". Starts elaborating, and continues to restate the hate message, he will probably be arrested for any one of a number of charges - "Disturbing the Peace", "Inciting a Riot", etc. And if it went to court, most judges would back the arresting officers.

Utter bull****.

Inciting a riot and hate speech are two different things. You can yell who you hate all you want.

We protect hate speech in this nation and will continue to do so.

If you don't believe in protecting Free Speech, there's always Europe.
