Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday or

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

The article references the issue but it is a bit startling that guys like Ryan and Priebus didn't get support for the bill lined up ahead of time. It's like they were asleep during the Boehner years. What did they think would happen with the Freedom Caucus?

But, yea, like Radcen said, that Trump got this wrong is expected. Anyone who makes a statement to the effect, "Who knew healthcare is hard?" is a political moron who hasn't been paying attention at all over the past decade.
I suspect they never bothered to get support before the election because they never thought in their wildest dreams they'd win as big as they did. That caught them off-guard.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

Trump and Ryan obviously believed (hoped?) they could ram something as complex/divisive as national healthcare through the House in a scant 18 days.

An unrealistic, inept, and condescending game plan.

Yeah, how's that turn out for Trump? Can you say, "crash and burn"?

Agreed. One of the really startling things is that several TV talking heads reported on Wednesday that the momentum was towards a YES vote on the bill. Then on Thursday Trump and Bannon and others jumped in with Congress to lobby for it. And they so pissed people off that they turned out to push people in the opposite direction. Some closer Trump is.

Being a bully works in his type of business because usually he has something the other person wants. In this case, Trump really has nothing these other politicians wants or needs, hence they have more freedom to say 'no'.

Good point. Trump needs to have another book ghost written .... THE ART OF THE BULLY.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

Because the GOP have used the issue for years to gain power in D.C. and elsewhere - they have said for years they know how to fix the system so it's cheaper AND better and they will end the nightmare that is Obamacare and come riding to the rescue, just put them in power and we'll see! Etc. If it turns out they really don't have a clue, at some point the blame shifts to them.

The buck always stops with Democrats I guess.

Reminds me of some of the financial crisis threads. Clinton and the Democrats (who lost the House and Senate in 1994) caused all these problems with GSE's and regulations requiring banks to lend to poor blahs, and when the GOP took over they were powerless to address any of these problems caused by Clinton and the democrats, despite having the WH, Senate, and House! It's all your fault CLINTON AND BARNEY FRANK!!!

The Republican fell short of the needed votes to pass legislation to correct the Democrats mess. It's not like they didn't try. I'm not going to say I'm pleased about it. You are correct, 7 years of talk should have allowed sufficient time to develop a cohesive plan to be presented. It came close, but not close enough.

If that is where things are, I would rather the House take a step back and work out the details, as opposed to the rush job the Democrats did. After all, the final House vote for the Democrats was taken during extended session late on Christmas Eve. And everyone knows how that turned out.

Re: Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday

The Democrats could have voted for this mess, thus putting the blame squarely in the Republican's hands. That they chose not to do so is telling.

Politically, it would have been the right play for Democrats to support anything that would take the heat off their ownership of Obamacare.

It seems rather obvious all the broken promises Obamacare contains are acceptable to them, given how little apparent effort they have made to clean up their mess.

As we begin to get reports of what happened behind closed doors, it appears that Trump and Bannon may have cost themselves votes when they got involved in person to person lobbying with members of Congress.

If true, this is rather startling.

Didn't he write (well dictate to the writer) a book on deal making? Something called the Fart of the Deal? Something like that.

Nothing like watching brilliant leadership in action. Yes, it would be refreshing to see brilliant leadership. But, we have Trump and Ryan.
