'All hands on deck' for GOP, Trump as health care vote approaches

Wed March 22, 2017
By MJ Lee

President Donald Trump warned his fellow Republicans of big losses at the ballot box if they fail to repeal and replace Obamacare. Wednesday will reveal if House Republicans heed that message and back legislation that has already tested the President's political prowess and has Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan furiously counting every available vote. This is an all-hands-on deck situation," a senior House GOP aide said Tuesday. According to CNN's ongoing whip count as of Wednesday afternoon, 20 House Republicans have flat-out said they will vote against the bill to repeal or replace Obamacare, while four more have indicated they are likely to oppose it. Trump and Ryan must get 216 Republicans on board and can afford only 21 defections, if no Democrat joins them.
Trump/Ryan need 216 yes votes, which translates into a maximum of 21 GOP no votes. Unofficial counts say there currently are 24-26 GOP no votes. Some changes have been added to the bill which means this current version of the AHCA will be voted on without another cost analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). If no vote transpires Thursday or Friday at the latest, Trumpcare is DOA. Failure here would significantly affect Trumps legislative agenda which is to some extent dependent on the AHCA being the very first in a GOP string of carefully managed/sequenced legislative actions. If the AHCA House vote fails, Trump will go ballistic on the GOP 'no' caucus.

I'd rather not, given how many people it will negatively impact.

Unfortunately I'm afraid that's what it's going to take ...

We tried with a Man who cared about those people, not let's see what happens.

I don't see that they have the votes. This is a mistake. They should have focused on something they could get bipartisan support on, like tax reform or reforming Dodd-Frank.

Yeah...no. How about we don't wish for legislation that harms America. I don't need a political "win" this badly.

Conservatives know they don't have to vote for it and they know their constituents don't like it because it is just changing Obamacare slightly, so they won't be happy with them. If anything Trump's threats are just more empty promises to the caucus and they aren't about to fall in line with him or Paul Ryan for that matter.

If that is true then Trump will be exposed as the weak and ineffective leader he is. Doesn't that worry you?

There are huge tax cuts for the wealthy in the HC plan. It appears they are trying to keep the "good things" about the ACA while getting rid of the money to pay for them. So very typical of Republican cluelessness and fiscal irresponsibility.

It only worries me in the eroding sense of democracy. I'm not worried that he's being exposed as a bad leader because I always knew about it and expected it. Others will be in for a rude awakening.

As you know, I am a Republican, but I have to agree with exactly what you said here.
