The ban on all electronic devices larger than a cell phone being brought into the cabin of passenger aircraft coming from several Middle Eastern and African countries is indefinite and applies to nine airlines and 10 airports in eight countries, a source told Fox News Tuesday.
Senior administration officials are calling the measure an active-emergency amendment based on “evaluated intelligence” that terrorist groups continue to target aviation and consumer items for use in an attack. However, the decision is not based on any specific intelligence or imminent threat.
The eight countries affected by the ban are all Muslim-majority nations. They include Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Morocco.

I'd be interested to know what the relevance of the size of the electronic device is. They already scan laptops separately. Well at least they included Saudi Arabia this time, so we shouldn't hear complaining from the peanut gallery.

This is just another example of the Trump administration making it up as they go along.

"The US government’s unexpected ban on laptops, iPads and other electronics 'larger than a cellphone' on certain flights has sparked criticisms from technology experts, who say the new rules appear to be at odds with basic computer science."

It's about as effective as the TSA.

Keep working on that, but keep your day job for now.

I guess those terrorists can't bring their spy microwaves with them.

This ban leaves me with some serious questions. What exactly are they trying to prevent? What's the goal? Because this seems like a strange way to prevent planes from falling out of the sky.

First, all laptops have very large lithium batteries. You are not allowed to check lithium batteries on flights as they pose a risk of fire. They have to be kept in the pressurized part of the cabin. So what possible risk outweighs putting multiple fire hazards in the cargo bay of a plane?

Second, laptops are already screened separately with their owners standing by(ie looking guilty). They already do random bomb swabs on laptops. Checking a laptop reduces the level of scrutiny. And the laptop is still going to be on the plane.

Whatever the threat is, it would have to be something that requires physical access while in the air(you can always wifi to a laptop in the cargo hold), is not detected by security, and outweighs a known fire risk that will eventually bring down a plane. And there's also the increase in thefts at baggage claim that are going to occur. And frankly, I'm not sure anything could possibly meet that criteria.

IMO, the two motivations I can see are possibly discouraging Muslims from traveling to the US (there's no way in hell I'd trust a laptop to baggage handlers) and more likely accessing their laptops to "gather intelligence" after it's been checked in.

Yeah... this doesn't make any sense. Lithium batteries in the cargo hold?

But, if someone hid a bomb in an electronic device and brought down an aircraft, you all would be screaming, "why didn't Trump ban electronic devices on airplanes".

Let's quadruple the number of lithium batteries in the unreachable cargo area of the plane. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

But, if someone hid a bomb in an electronic device and brought down an aircraft, you all would be screaming, "why didn't Trump ban electronic devices on airplanes".

No, we wouldn't.

Seriously are you expecting Americans in 2017 to say "yeah no problem I'll never bring an ipad with me when I travel." Liberal hippy Americans?

Re: Electronics ban on flights to US is indefinite, applies to 8 Muslim-majority nati

Well that sucks. I have to travel to and from some of those places on a semi-regular basis.

I don't get the reasoning behind this. Yes, security screening isnt always as thorough in those airports. But I have traveled through airports in non-Muslim countries in Africa and Asia with even worse screening but it is ok to bring electronics through those airports?

a) No we wouldn't.
b) these new rules don't make planes any safer.

Would it apply to American citizens?

Are you suggesting it only applies to people of a certin religion? That would be unconstitutional!

You really think hippy liberals are going to demand the TSA take away their ipads. You really think this.

You missed the point.

Yes, they don't have different screening lines for American citizens.

No, you missed the big picture.

Well I wouldn't. No matter how much I hate Trump, I don't expect him to be a fortune teller.

Like I said, these rules are stupid because they don't actually make planes any safer.

QUICK!! Find a liberal court judge! THIS CANNOT STAND!!

Re: Electronics ban on flights to US is indefinite, applies to 8 Muslim-majority nati

Would it apply to American citizens?

I'm certain it would. It would get too complicated for the security screeners otherwise. Such unequal treatment would probably make for a less than cordial environment on the flight as well. :)

What's the big picture? Oh, I know, "Don Cheeto is stupidracistsexistnazirussianspy". Am I close?
