Man, that is just depressing.

I still not sure what you want to discuss. Theres a drug addiction epidemic in this country and its not new. Its been around for centuries and it reaches all classes. Parents who are airplane pilots are not immune from it.

What about this story did inspire you to create a thread. Your left that part out.

I thought it may be of interest to others but that could have been a mistake on my part

you allude to the idea that drugs are an old issue.
If that is the case then things like two parents dying from an overdose & leaving fours kids behind may not be a big deal to most folk.
Must just be normal stuff .......

Sad, but not really breaking news.

Terrible. Horrible. Never heard of fentanyl.

I read last night that his last flight was on the 10th. And also that the deaths may have been the result of both heroin and fentanyl. The wife, according to her parents, had battled addiction.

Sad to say this isn't the first, nor will it will be last of this type of story

People get hooked on drugs from all backgrounds, all demographics, and in all areas of this country

I have seen it happen from cocaine overdoses on a guy making 400k a year, and we got a family in DC at the shelter there from a plumber who had od'ed on meth

No one is immune....and legalizing drugs is just going to make things worse.....

At lease in my opinion

If I remember the stats correctly, fentanyl is 15x stronger than heroine and 100x stronger than morphine. And it can even be absorbed through the skin. This stuff is dosed in micrograms. So overdosing with it is extremely easy to do. Dangerous stuff.

What is going on here, America?

looks like they are cutting heroin and other black market opioids with fentanyl, some of which is coming from China.

Deadly Fentanyl Trade Linked To Chinese Companies : NPR

it's scary. here's an article that explains why it's resulting in fatal overdoses :

https://www.statnews.com/2016/09/29/fentanyl-heroin-photo-fatal-doses/

now would be a great time to stay away from heroin and pain pills of questionable origin. this **** is killing a lot of people.

What is going on here, America?

Simple.

When you make drugs completely illegal like we do (instead of countries that, for example, have clinics where heroin addicts can get clean doses), the only drug dealers are completely unscrupulous ones. And lately, they've found that if they cut fentanyl in with otherwise watered down heroin, they get a potent mix. Trouble is that fentanyl is incredibly potent, so a few milligrams off and you might just be dead.

_________
Edit: in fact, as Helix's links demonstrate, Fentayl is so damn powerful that when I said "a few milligrams" off, I was underestimating its strength.

3 mg = fatal dose for humans.

https://www.statnews.com/2016/09/29/fentanyl-heroin-photo-fatal-doses/

So....fifty or a hundred micrograms off and you kill someone. When it's mixed in with another powerful opiate, the margin of error is even smaller.

And a microgram is smaller than a dealer or dopesick junkie is interested in or capable of measuring, as a general matter. This is especially true where the stuff they're mixing has already likely been cut a few times anyway, as it goes down the supply chain.

oh good, I guess I can look forward to another infraction :2wave:

I personally don't think you did anything worthy of an infraction in the least...though I am not the mods.

I think the point some are making is that this is hardly earth shattering as it goes on all the time.

The fact they are apparently upper middle class and in their thirties is interesting. But leaving kids behind is a - sadly - common theme in drug abuse.

I don't think anyone should knock you for posting this...not at all.

I just think it is a relatively common tale - with a twist.

Sounds more like a 'General Political Discussion' story.

But that is just me.
