Chuck Berry, the perpetual wild man of rock music who helped define its rebellious spirit in the 1950s and was the sly poet laureate of songs about girls, cars, school and even the “any old way you choose it” vitality of the music itself, died March 18 at at his home in St. Charles County, Mo. He was 90.

St. Charles County police announced the death in a Facebook post on its website, saying officers responded to a medical emergency at Mr. Berry’s home and administered lifesaving techniques but could not revive him. No further information was available.
Long life and great music.

I loved the way so many of his songs opened with a catchy guitar lick.

Nothing like jamming some Johnny B Goode in the car with the windows down on a clear day and open road.

That's a name that rock and roll was built on. He wasn't the first and maybe wasn't the best but his licks set a generation in motion and he was a freaking hit machine.

Definitely one of the founders of rock.

Greetings, Lutherf. :2wave:

R.I.P Chuck Berry! He was one of the great iconic symbols of that time, and he will be remembered. Condolences to his family and friends. :peace

R.I.P. Duck Walk Man

Guy is worshiped here in St. Louis. Even up to last year, He still played live shows at one of the local music spots ("Blueberry Hill"). He was always grateful of the folks who'd come out to see him, even if his songs had slowed down a bit, and he had to sit in a chair with his guitar in his lap. Good night, Chuck.

Definitely one of the founders of rock.

Berry was one of the break out artists but guys like Roy Brown and Jackie Brenston and Bill Haley were doing it a few years earlier.

He'll outlive the human race. RIP

Thanks for the music Chuck

Damn, RIP Chuck.. Rock n Roll guitar would not exist as it should without ya'

John Lennon is being quoted as saying "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry.'"

R.I.P Mr. Berry.

While many record companies were producing music that was written by other people, Chuck Berry said no, and did his own thing. Elvis had great stage presence, and could sing, but those where not his songs. Hound Dog was created by Big Mama Thornton, Love Me Tender was created by Ken Darby who changed the lyrics to a song called Aura Lee, which was written before the Civil War, etc, etc. While Presley was a great performer, I wouldn't call him an artist because he didn't create his music.

Chuck Berry, on the other had did write much of his own music, although he also did a few songs which were scripted for him by the music companies, like Elvis. However, most of his material was original, which is why I prefer him to Elvis, and believe that he was a better all around artist because of it. In addition, many musicians were copying Berry's stage moves. Back in 1969, I saw Brownsville Station play in Traverse City Michigan, and saw their bass player attempt Berry's hop on one foot while playing. It was so bad I pissed off their manager because I could not stop laughing. I laughed for days afterwards too. But everybody wanted to be like Chuck Berry on the stage. That man was electricity in motion. Same could be said for Jerry Lee Lewis, who I also liked. Lewis and Berry hated each other with a passion, but I loved them both.

Rest in piece, Mr. Berry, and please, wherever you are jamming up there, don't let God catch you playing with your dingaling.

If Elvis Presley was the King of rock and roll, Chuck Berry was it's Godfather.

Great musician. Rest in peace.

Whenever Johnny B Goode comes on I sing it the way it was originally written. Not a lot of people know that whole story.

I like his music

Heard on the news toady he had recorded a new album last year. When they plan to release it I do not know. May depend upon his will.
CHUCK – New Album Coming In 2017 « Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry was working on new album | Fox News

A press release from October 18, 2016 -- Berry's 90 birthday -- said the rock legend recorded the album in several studios in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri and featured his longtime backing group and his children Charles Berry Jr. and Ingrid Berry.

"This record is dedicated to my beloved [wife] Toddy," Berry said at the time the album was announced. "My darlin' I'm growing old! I've worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up up my shoes!"

poorly acted, but recreation of an actual incident between the two

I interviewed JLL in the 70's in Montreal when it was thought he was a done dog. He contended there was no "bad blood" before or when he went overtime. In fact he said Chuck was impressed with the act and the two later became friends. In 1997 or 78 they did a replay of the original concert where a now aging JLL set fire to his piano while playing with his feet....Berry stood off to the side watching, but you could tell it was acting. The two warmly embraced when JLL was done and CB started up

Praise him with great praise!

Modern non-classical music more or less owes itself to Chuck Berry and Robert Johnson.

(Ok, ok, OK. There were a bunch of other founders. I get it. I think the sentence still makes sense).

Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry had a physical fight to determine who was the #1 originator rock 'n' roller. Jerry Lee attested that Chuck won. Then there was that photo of a smiling Chuck in frontal line with frontal exposure of white women.

So what. When I was a young teen, I glommed onto "Havana Moon" and "Memphis, Tennessee". In "Memphis", Berry's voice was oddly different than other before. Great. Thanks for the OP.

One of the great founders of rock n roll music. He taught so many how to play rock guitar and inspired so many who followed him. One of my all time favorite performers. RIP brown eyed handsome man.
