SS Agent got a laptop stolen from her car with plans for Trump tower in it.

As the story stated that the computer was heavily encrypted so Trump should not be at any risk damn it.

Such a computer in the power down condition should be proof against any attacks up a state level attack.

When I first read the headline the first thing that came to my mind was the question of whether the computer was encrypted or not and as it was this is no big deal except for the agent career.

It nice that the government is finally encrypting their laptops decades after I had done so as a matter of course.

I concur that it is far better for it to be encrypted than not. However, once someone has physical access to the laptop? Screwed. It's just a matter of time.

You automatically lose any cred by being upset that Trump is not at risk.

Ah, yeah...

The combination of Trump Tower evacuation plans AND Hillary's email issues seem anachronistic for a SS agent to have on their computer.

With proper encryption that "matter of time" would require more years to accomplish than the hacker will be alive, assuming no huge leaps in quantum computing before then, since they say it was full disc encryption.

But I don't know what level of encryption the laptop used since it wasn't cleared for classified information. Also, if it was in sleep mode rather than powered off there could be work arounds. Also assuming they don't use encryption with a backdoor.

If she was careless enough to leave the laptop in the car she may have been careless enough to not follow proper shutdown procedures.

I can think of some legitimate reasons. Perhaps the agent was questioned by the FBI as a witness and there were communications on the laptop regarding that. I'm just guessing, though.

Hillary Clinton email investigation info​

It is not likely that this laptop was the only computer that contained that information.

Still, what is a Secret Service Agent doing with it? This is not their area of enforcement or investigation.
It is fishy.

Time as in a few millions times the current life time of the universe.

The FBI once try the old brute force guessing attacks on a truecrypt protected drive for over a year before they gave up.

No the agent laptop is a paperweight until someone reformat the hard drive and placed a new OS on it.

Come on open source full disk encrypting is more then enough protection and had been for years and then somehow even with my very low regard of the federal government the woman laptop should be at least protected to that level.

As far as her shutting it down in sleep mode she would need to be near brain dead to be that stupid.

Well unless she gave the passhrase and any key file also no one is getting any information from that computer and if she did that she would had been better off just offloading the files in question and turning them over.

An how would turning over her hard drive to someone else destroy incriminating evidence unless you are claiming she have the only such copy with no back ups on her laptop.

There is something very fishy about this story.

First off it is my understanding when you are dealing with sensitive material you don't bring your laptop home with you and you sure as heck don't leave in your car in your driveway along with files as reported.

Second if something like that happened, it would not be leaked to the press. And who was the first to report it? New York Daily News.

Come on everyday for the last forty days or so had proven beyond question that Trump is totally unfit to be president and an ongoing threat not only to the US and it citizens but to the rest of the world also.

Every morning I turn on the news just to see what the clown had said and done since I had gone to bed.

The very last thing I hear was him and his spoke person getting the UK upset with a silly suggestion that Obama somehow got the UK intelligence agency to do the tapping of Trump tower.

No I do not wish the man well at all.

Well I never work for the government but I happen to have information on my computers that control over half a million dollars of investment on average and from time to time leave one of those computers in my car.

The only thing I am risking is the hardware cost of the computer in question thanks to full disk encryption at the AES level.
 
Everyone should try to skip the shiny things embedded within the story of a laptop theft from a Secret Service Agent Marie Argentieri. The theft appears to have nothing to do with Trump Tower or Trump Tower floor plans. The theft appears to have everything to do with Argentieri as a supportive investigator for Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

Evidence of the specific targeting is transparent within the eye witness stories that a car pulled up, a passenger exited the vehicle – went directly to Agent Argentieri’s vehicle, broke in, took the back pack and walked away quickly.

The thief knew exactly what they were looking for, this wasn’t a random heist of convenience.

I can think of only one scenario that makes sense: The SS agent set up the theft.

She gave someone the information to access the laptop and then pretended it got stolen. This is obviously what happened.
