Monsanto Weed Killer Roundup Faces New Doubts on Safety in Unsealed Documents

The reputation of Roundup, whose active ingredient is the world’s most widely used weed killer, took a hit on Tuesday when a federal court unsealed documents raising questions about its safety and the research practices of its manufacturer, the chemical giant Monsanto.
...

The litigation was touched off by a determination made nearly two years ago by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, that glyphosate was a probable carcinogen, citing research linking it to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

This stuff is everywhere.

Maybe it shouldn't be...

How can we know? Trusting the companies that profit from products to determine their safety doesn't seem like a reliable way to find out.

Monsanto is one of those corporations that are transparently evil. Like if a company were to take over the world and then become wholly evil. Like out of 5th Element, Netrunner, or Brave New World. I could easily see them turning the world into a dystopia. They way the double down on utterly destroying small farmers with bogus lawsuits is unreal. I wouldn't put it past them to secretly perform experiments on humans in secret labs ala a precursor to Umbrella Corp in Resident Evil.

Monsanto is uniquely evil for using the same active ingredient as the world's most widely used weed killers do. ;)

From the OP link:

The safety of glyphosate is not settled science. A number of agencies, including the European Food Safety Agency and the E.P.A., have disagreed with the international cancer agency, playing down concerns of a cancer risk, and Monsanto has vigorously defendedom the glyphosate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glyphosate

"Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant. It is an organophosphorus compound, specifically a phosphonate. It is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. It was discovered to be an herbicide by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1970.[3] Monsanto brought it to market in 1974 under the trade name Roundup, and Monsanto's last commercially relevant United States patent expired in 2000."

It was patented by Monsanto and uniqely distributed by patent protection until 2000. That's why Monsanto is the "bad guy."
