White House: Trump paid $38 million in income tax in 2005

Washington (CNN)The White House said Tuesday President Donald Trump earned more than $150 million in income and paid $38 million in taxes even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction in response to questions about the coming publication of his 2005 return.The $38 million was in addition to "paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes," a White House official said ahead of an anticipated MSNBC news report about the returns.
"You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago," the official said Tuesday.

This is getting out of control....We now have supposed journalists soliciting people within the government to commit felonies to expose private information.

Regardless of how you feel about what you should be privy to concerning a public official like the President, this is scary stuff....

Not to me...it's fantastic stuff. It's a triumph of the public/press vs. the political/financial elite.

Trump was full of **** when he said he could not release his tax returns...and tonight it was proven (though anyone who knows AMerican tax laws knew he was full of it when he said that).

As far as I am concerned, EVERY candidate should be forced by law to release their IRS tax returns from at least 10 years prior to the election date.

Trump refused and the press forced him to.

I just hope a) whomever did this does not get into trouble; and b) I hope they can find and release ALL of his tax returns...even if they prove he did nothing wrong.


Anyway, I doubt Trump did something illegal with his taxes. But he is obviously trying to hide something..so I assume he is not worth remotely what he says he is. And if enough returns of his are made public, we will be able to determine roughly what he is worth.


Once again, I have ZERO loyalty to any political party or movement.

But I do hate slimy, pathetic POTUS's...and Trump is clearly one of those.

Just a prediction (We'll know in a couple of hours): MSNBC is not going to illegally show the world Trump's tax returns, even if they really do have them, which is highly unlikely.

This is a publicity stunt, pure and simple. They will talk around the issue, but aren't going to risk any felony convictions by showing the world the Great One's mysterious tax returns.

If I'm wrong, we'll soon know, but I really doubt it.

Your repeat of the bolded statement above reminds me of Trump telling us he is smart. Some feel that the more someone repeats something hard to believe people believe it LESS.

I am actually surprised that you would make the statement that yo could determine his debt worth by tax returns. We know that his core holdings are real estate. Something that has appreciated quite a bit the last 8 years. So to the extent that he bought and held properties during this period, his returns would tell you little about his net worth.

Not sure releasing tax returns is something that makes any sense, unless someone thinks there is tax fraud.

The tax return released is from 2005. its 12 years old. those were not the tax returns people were pursuing during the election that the Donald was talking about then.

Anyway, regarding your comment about 10 years of tax returns.. what exactly are you going to learn from them? you have a pretty good idea of how much someone is worth without looking at a tax return.
From a tax return, you cannot see who they got money from nor who they gave it to. So you cant say you will learn who they are in bed with or who they owe etc...
So what is the point?

Wow...you don't know much about tax returns or investing - do you? Don't bother answering - your above statement just proved you don't.

A) you have NO IDEA what he owns. Just because he says he owns something - does not mean he does or does it show how much of it is leveraged. Owning a million dollar home means nothing if you owe $1.2 million on it.
It shows how incredibly naive/gullible you are that you just believe him because he says so. Owning real estate means NOTHING unless you know how much is leveraged. I have owned over 16 houses (almost all less than 8 years old - some paid off and some leveraged to the hilt)...I know. I owned 5 properties at once a while back. WHen I told people, they were really impressed. And on the surface - they were all good properties in good areas - it sounded like they should have been. But I had some of them leveraged to the max.
You can tell NOTHING about someone's wealth by just knowing how many properties (and even which properties) they say they own.
Almost everyone who has owned a home should know that.

B) go and ask a respected accountant - who has dealt with wealthy people - if reading ones tax returns over thee previous ten years can or cannot give you a general idea about this person's net worth. Especially one who is as active with his investments (and losses/bankruptcies) as Trump is.

I cannot prove that his returns will show his rough net worth (or at least if he is worth $10 billion or not).

But for you to infer they cannot proves you have no idea what you are talking about on this.

Do yourself a favor - stick to what you know. Cause tax returns and real estate ain't it.
