“There are many ways to surveil each other,” Conway told the Record, a New Jersey newspaper, on Sunday. “There was an article this week that talked about how you can surveil someone through their phones, through certainly their television sets — any number of different ways. Microwaves that turn into cameras, et cetera. So we know that is just a fact of modern life.”

I get what she's trying to say... and in essence, I agree with her.... people can be surveilled through a number of ways we may not think of. I understood the television set thing to be about our habits on media used with television and not the TV itself... even though we have Wi-Fi abled TVs now. However, in the tech savvy world, this just isn't close enough.

I hope she doesn't double down on anything she's said.

I'll never look at my Microwave the same again. :lamo

I knew something was strange about it; never could get that Clock right.

Re: ‘Microwaves that turn into cameras’: Conway defends Trump claim by implying wider

I think the TV hack allows them to record audio of what's going on in the room, even when the tv is "off."

Damn I wish I could do that.

Meh, she's a delusional flake like the rest of the administration. Absolutely zero credibility, the same as Trump.

How long they can keep this charade up, is beyond me.

You have to plug in an USB, and run a program on the USB to start the hack, and it only works on 2012 and 2013 Samsung TVs. So... basically you need physical access to the TV before even coming remotely close to use it as a spying gadget.

Re: ‘Microwaves that turn into cameras’: Conway defends Trump claim by implying wider

How many threads do we need on this?

Funny how you guys fail to understand her actual words.

Her actual words were "...microwaves that turn into cameras". So what exactly are we failing to understand?

Makes no sense. USB is an interface.

Please! Do explain! I'm very interested to know how to turn a microwave into a camera.

Of all of the things that could be hacked, I'm fairly sure that's the most impossible.

"Even when the tv is off", eh?
This application would indeed only make sense with the TV off, as any volume from programming would render the feature useless.

Okay lets try this again. To get your Samsung 2012 or 2013 Smart TV to spy on you, the following has to be done.

1) Someone has to get their hands on the TV.. physically.
2) Someone has to plug in an USB dongle that installs the spyware software on the TV, that makes it possible to "spy on you".

It cant be done without these 2 steps.

I don't know about that in this specific case, but in general it's not much of an issue. Since the tv is the source of the sound it's relatively easy to filter that signal from the audio in, not unlike a noise cancelling headphone. I'm not sure what the mic on the tv is intended for, but if it's intended to be used while the tv is on it likely has something similar built in.

Folks once likely said the same thing about a cell phone or eyeglasses. ;)

Hint: you simply add the "spy" camera to the device.

And if you have physical access why on earth would you bother? The CIA is in your house (definitionally illegally) and they're going to hack your tv instead of planting audio and video bugs? Hell, they can use a laser mic to hear what's going on inside without even coming inside.

any particular reason you'd want to place that in literally the worst possible location?

PS it's wifi. Microwaves work at 2.45GHz. 802.11b/g/n is 2.4GHz.

Yes, and that is why the story is idiotic.

Context.

Have you considered the trend for "open concept" floor plans centered around the kitchen? A microwave is seldom actually in use.

I guess we should consider the context- that the speaker (Conway) is either an idiot or liar (or both).
I guess it DOES serve us to consider her comments "in context".

Re: ‘Microwaves that turn into cameras’: Conway defends Trump claim by implying wider

"microwaves that turn into cameras" is an absolute statement which is not altered by context. Either there are microwaves which turn into cameras or there aren't.

You don't know that.

Yes I do, because it was in the freaking Wikileaks document that exposed the bloody exploit..
