Becker told Bright that he was going to search his car. When Bright refused, Becker called for a K-9 unit. That's when Bright tells the cops he's an attorney, and offers up his American Bar Association card to prove it.
The K-9 unit was brought in, and according to the cops, indicated a presence of narcotics, allowing cops to do a full search of the vehicle. They found nothing.
Both the Bright and his passenger were released without charges.
According to WECT, the Wilmington Police Department started an internal affairs investigation last Friday. On Wednesday, Chief Ralph Evangelous issued the following statement, which will also be given to officers to read in the future:
"Taking photographs and videos of people that are in plain sight including the police is your legal right. As a matter of fact we invite citizens to do so when they believe it is necessary. We believe that public videos help to protect the police as well as our citizens and provide critical information during police and citizen interaction."

Good for this guy. I think referencing non-existent laws when trying to arrest somebody should be a fireable offense. It probably isn't, but it should be. What really annoys me is that the cop feels the need to point out 'my sargeant' when the Uber guy says 'your friend'. As if 'your friend' is meant to be an offensive term coming from this little guy.

you mean the cops LIED, which is exactly what our nation is doing more & more of as of recent times

LYING is an acceptable behavior now; thanks Mr. President

PS WOW, no wonder they call them PIGs ........ that dude needs to go on a GD diet ...............

Yea, I saw that. Once the cops realized he was a lawyer, they started singing a different tune. LOL.

I prefer Dominicans.

Interesting side-point...this is an attorney who has an active practice, yet finds himself forced to take a side job as an Uber Driver in order to make ends meet.

When I was in law school I used to go to this restaurant near the University for lunch.

One of the waiters had served me periodically during the latter two years of study. Sometime in the last half of my third year he happened to ask me what I was in school for and when I told him he said he was a lawyer with an active practice in town.

I was shocked and asked why he was waiting tables. His response was that the field is overflowing with competitors and he had to supplement his income somehow.

This is factually true; many graduates find that those lucrative $100,000 a year new associate positions at high powered law firms are few and far between these days. (And even if you get one, you are working 80+ hour weeks.)

A whole lot of new, as well as older experienced attorneys are finding themselves doing document review for $20.00 to $25.00 an hour for Legal Temporary firms. Or fighting for Administrative Law positions in State government.

Funny how that's not the case with medical doctors, seems like there are too few and they all charge too much. ;)

Just something that came to mind seeing this attorney moonlighting as an Uber Driver.

what causes you to believe he has an active practice?

It should be a jail-able offense in and of itself.

It sucks but cops are allowed to lie to you. It is up to you to know which of their orders you must legally obey or not.

I guess they'll have to change the ole saying from, "when pigs fly" to 'when pigs lie' ........ which is often .......
