AG Sessions asks remaining 46 US attorneys to resign [W:176]

Re: AG Sessions asks remaining 46 US attorneys to resign

Moderator's Warning:
Folks, there's a topic here, and it's the requested resignation of the remaining 46 US attorney generals. There are a multitude of Jeff Sessions / Russia threads that you can use to continue such discussions. Unless your post is directly related to the actual topic, and not simply a person in the topic, I'd suggest not making it

For historical context, so I know if this is a high or low number, how many Bush-appointed US attorneys did Obama ask to resign when he took office?

I'm unsure of what the exact number for Bush. I know Clinton got rid of all 93. I believe Bush did as well, or very close to it. Same goes for Obama, who was rid of at least 2/3rds of the Bush holdovers.

Thanks Zyphlin.

Then this appears to be much ado about nothing.

Pretty much. It's unusual to do a mass firing without almost no notice and without replacements ready to take over, but that's just normal Trump incompetence causing at least short term chaos. We're getting used to that by now.

Actually, even that's not entirely unusual, nor is it some sign of incompetence or a lack of understanding in government. People may bitch about a lot of things about Bill Clinton, but being a poor politician or student of government would not be one of them. Yet he fired 93 US attorney's very early on, and no...he did not immediately have 93 replacements in place ready to take over.

Yay. I learned something new today.

Those jobs, are still part of the spoils system.
People are also making a big stink about Preet getting fired, it's probably showboating/grandstanding for his run for public office.
He's feinting, being a part of the #resistance, to gain votes imo.

It's not a big deal but I'll quote from an LA Times article:

Replacing U.S. attorneys stretches back to Reagan - latimes

In 1993, he was the U.S. attorney in Pittsburgh and the liaison between the outgoing George H.W. Bush administration and the incoming Clinton administration. "We had been asking them for months: 'When do you want our resignations?' " he said.

The answer came in a meeting with Webster Hubbell, the associate attorney general, in mid-March. "He said, 'I have good news and bad news. The good news is the attorney general wants you to stay until your successor is confirmed. The bad news is she wants your resignations by the end of the week,' " Corbett said.

He said the demand for resignations by the week's end was surprising.

"We knew this was coming, but it broke with tradition to do it this way," he said. "It didn't make for a smooth transition. By the end of that week, they had backed off a bit. Over the course of the next few months, they made the changes. It was how the message was delivered more than what actually occurred."

And of course I'm old enough to remember the firings of the USAs back then was a big scandal - the WSJ among others accused Clinton of doing it that way to get rid of a few pesky republicans looking into Clinton stuff or other democratic politicians.

I don't think it's a big deal, but I understand he met with Trump (or his people) and was directly asked to stay on, and just a few weeks later was fired with the rest. That's a bit odd...

Re: AG Sessions asks remaining 46 US attorneys to resign

I heard the words cone out of his mouth on the radio. He said he never met with anyone from the Russian government, which was not true.

They ALL meet with foreign dignataries. What good would any of them be if they did not?

Photo contradicts Pelosi's statement about not meeting Kislyak
Kremlin spokesman: Russian ambassador met with advisers to Clinton campaign too | TheHill

Thank god no one was caught on camera saying how they could REALLY work with russians after they were elected to their second term. Right?

Those so quick to accuse again stand with egg on their faces.

There are real actual issues to handle.

They are up there on our dime wasting time and resources when people are really hurting.

I think he was asked if he was prepared to stay on.

I never say anywhere he was actually asked to stay on.

Preet is a big Ham and hes going to do well in the private sector.

Obama is not in office anymore. So his ability to do anything for the Russians is severely compromised. Trump, however....

That's true, but it should stop you from commenting on what Obama said to Medvedev.

And it's now known that the Hillary campaign met with the Russians.

I'd say you should watch what happens next with him.
I'd guess that there's a 80% chance he's going to run for public office.

He started a separate twitter account about a week before all this happened.
He knew what he was doing.

I agree with that, I'm just pointing out it's not normal to offer a guy a job then a few weeks later fire him. At least it's not normal for that position.

I agree, maybe he (Preet) changed his tune or maybe, it was already understood by both and Team Trump threw him a bone for his election(they both knew this the whole time).
I'm not sure if we'll ever know the truth of all this.

Yeah yeah nice one. We all know the tired 8 year mantra of .....

It's Bushes fault !!!

Deflection fail.

I never really thought they had not had discussions. It's so common for potential leaders to meet other reps or leaders.

It only turns bad when they start conspiring against US interests.

Pretty sure that allowing this guy to stay was throwing Schumer a bone thinking they could work together. After all Trump is not really a true Republican. Now that Schumer is playing hardball Trump is tossing his guy out.

You're the one who tried to deflect. I'm simply pointing out that Obama doesn't have the power to do much for them anymore.

When you look at the sanctions that Obama put on them, it's hard to paint that as "helping" them. We'll see what Trump's record is when there is one.
