Father of slain soldier who criticized Trump says travel rights reviewed | Reuters

The father of an American soldier killed in Iraq who came under criticism last year from then-candidate Donald Trump said he has canceled a speaking engagement in Toronto after being notified that his U.S. travel privileges were under review.

"This turn of events is not just of deep concern to me but to all my fellow Americans who cherish our freedom to travel abroad," Khan said in a statement issued by the engagement organizer on Monday. "I am grateful for your support and look forward to visiting Toronto in the near future."

"Theoretically, if the government had any criminal information on any U.S. citizen they have a right to question them under law, but it would be very rare to revoke their travel privileges unless they have been charged with a crime," Khurgel said.

Trump signed a revised executive order on Monday banning citizens from six Muslim-majority nations from traveling to the United States, but Pakistan is not one of those countries and the ban does not apply to U.S. citizens or legal permanent U.S. residents.

This story is still developing and I'm intensely curious on where it may go. Khan is Pakistani so his privileges wouldn't be affected by the travel ban. Since he's Pakistani and hasn't committed any crimes, I believe his freedoms are being violated because he is a vocal opponent of Donald Trump. When will Trump understand he's not a monarch? If anyone has any additional information, I'd love to hear it. As of now revoking political opponent's freedom to travel has no justification. The light is dimming for Trump in the canopy of American values.

Respectfully, Winston, you don't have enough information to "believe his freedoms are being violated." You don't even know what is meant by "his travel privileges are under review." Why do you immediately jump to the conclusion that Trump is now revoking a political opponent's freedom to travel?" Or that Trump had ANYTHING to do with it at all??

You get half of the information, and go on another crusade about losing American values and freedoms..

Bravo!

Can you get back to us when the entire story comes out.

Because I think Trump is petty enough to do that to someone. I don't have enough information. If Trump did do that, it is mighty brazen of him. I don't know what kind of justification he'll come up with. What are they trying to say now? Khan is a thread to national security? That's where my red lights go off. I'm aware of America post-Patriot act. Our country used to have safeguards in place for all Americans. Whether or not you were born in Oklahoma or Pakistani naturalized. Taking the Trump-Khan feud out of this, American's need to be aware of how close they are to being detained without due process. If the government labels you a terrorist, say goodbye to your rights. We've created a power structure that allows the president to wield power form a centralized location against political enemies by labeling them as terrorists and that is truly frightening. How far can this go? What if Khan's privleges are suspended for having an uncle that one time said Hello to al-Qaeda when they were fighting the Soviet's. The point is, it could be an oversight of power, and I wouldn't put it past Trump, Bannon, or Miller, to enact revenge on Khan. It may not be politically motivated, but the implications are clear. If you don't get on board with the Trump agenda, we are going to mess with your rights.

Still, we don't have enough info. But, if I'm right, then we all need to oppose this to set a precedent for any runaway executive branch in the future.

Good to know. But too early to conclude anything. Wait for more info, but trust Winston will stay on top of the goings-on and give us pertinent info.

Unofficial CBP whispers speculate that the snafu may have something to do with Mr. Khan's "Global Entry" (expedited screening program for pre-approved low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States) status. There have been reports that some American Muslims have had their Global Entry status revoked without explanation after the Trump inauguration.

Nothing concrete concerning Mr. Khan as of yet. Just rumors at this point.

What is this guy's immigration status? He's not an American citizen or else the government can't deny him entry into the US.

He is an American citizen

The article is not clear on which country is restricting his travel the US or Canada. If he has dual citizenship Pakistani and American, he might be restricted on that case.

If he has a criminal background even a DUI he could be prevented from coming into Canada.

Or of course it could have been someone who called the organization pretending to be Immigration saying he may not be allowed in. Or the ticket sales were poor and they decided to cancel it in a way to shift blame. The information so far is lacking

Just noticed this is a double post. My bad. JANFU posted this earlier today.

I don't see any mechanism by which it is the US government reviewing his travel status. Even if he has dual citizenship, the US government doesn't recognize dual citizenship. If you have US citizenship you are an American in the eyes of US law. If a government is doing this it has to be the Canadians.

A more likely scenario...not very many people signed up for his $100 a ticket talk and so he made up some bull**** story about his immigration status being reviewed knowing mindless leftists would seize this as an opportunity for more uninformed poutrage.

It is possible. This is a very vague story.

Yeah...it was probably the malicious prankster theory. I mean...what kind of a douchebag would make up a claim like that to exploit his dead son and put himself in the spotlight for another few minutes?

People will do anything for money. Khan sold his son's memory for 300 grand.

He has been conditioned to such abuses of power from the last 8 years.
